Slates from Glyn Ceriog - John Milner, Case Bound, HB, 212pp, 214photos, 10 maps, 6 drawings

After over forty years of research by author John Milner. the untold history of thece Ceiriog Valley slate industry 1529-1948 is revealed for the first time. This is volume 1 of John Milner's Industrial History of the Ceiriog Valley, to be released over the cert few years; the culmination of a lifetime's research work. It is much more than simply a book on the slate industry in this little corner of North East Wales. It relates the story of the English entrepreneurs who arrived to exploit the mineral wealth; that of the local inhabitants who, over the centuries, were provided with work and a modest living standard; the influence that the slate industry had on the creation of the Glyn Valley Tramway; and the cultural development of this little Welsh community. Case bound with full colour jacket 212 pages on quality art paper in full colour throughout Fold-out plans 214 photographs, 10 specially commissioned maps, 10 plans and 6 drawings
Price £28.50 + £5.00 P&P - available from yours truly

Which mines does this deal with Mike?
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

It deals with the Wynne and Cambrian in the main, but there are short entries on a few other very minor quarries.

There are reproductions (in colour!) of the abandonment plans for both Wynne and the Cambrian, though the scale of reproduction makes the writing on them a little difficult to decipher. The originals are chain scale.

(I'll not comment otherwise on the content as my name seems to appear in the research and photo credits rather more often than I anticipated!)

I was at the book launch and afterwards was kindly allowed by the owner to have a walk on the surface at Wynne it has changed tremendously since I was last there - I'll post some photos to the Wynne album in due course.

Graham beat me to it re the mines.

In terms of reproduction it is high quality, colour is used throughout and detail is very good. It will become very collectable

Still reading

I've added some more photos to the Wynne Archive Album, and some comparative ones from the other week to the Wynne User Album. I'll add some (even?) more to the Archive album when I get a mo. 🙂

I know nothing of this area but this book sounds so interesting seems a good way to start. Just ordered a copy. Must cut down on my book buying straight out the window.

There was also the consideration of the H&S aspects - the slate at Wynne is nothing like Blaenau's incorrodible rock. They reckoned that lasting 60 years on the roof was very good (!) for Wynne slate... so wherever it's been exposed to weather it starts to break down and striate. See my photo of slabs on the quarry floor that are disintegrating. I've spoken to people who've been into both Cambrian and Wynne and they say the rock both above and under ground is crumbling away and becoming extremely dangerous. There have been several falls in recent years from the roofs in Wynne, as well as a large collapse of one of the outside ends of the walls.

Just received the book from Mike. Obviously haven't read it yet but just to say his description of it is no exaggeration. It's a beautifully presented book.

I know this thread was started quite a long time ago, but I was wondering if anyone knows it the book is still available as I can't seem to find it on Moore books anymore, or anywhere else for that matter. I don't know much about these mines and would really like to find out more Was it a very limited edition by any chance?

The book was produced in sensible quantities but appealed to both Railway and Mining Enthusiasts alike and therefore sold out very quickly my regret was not purchasing a 100 copies at the outset. As soon as a I find a copy it is sold within days .

just keep looking one will appear - I was offered one by a member of this forum who changed their mind about selling so you never know

I was told (very recently) that John Milner now prefers to sell direct. That was referring to one of the more recent books though.

There is a demand for a reprint but he was not keen on the idea when I suggested it to him when the book sold out
