Rather than have this in the T shirt proceeds thread I thought it would be better to start a clean thread.

The idea:
In some of the popular / large / dangerous mines placing safety boxes.

questions:
Is it a good idea?
What should go in a box?
Where should they be left?

I was originally thinking of a plastic bin with a large label explaining its purpose, listing the contents and details of who to contact if things had been used / were missing.
If any one has seen a geo cache something similar but less hidden. The container would be taped shut with a date that it was last checked / taped.
as for contents
a map to exit from the location of the box.
water
basic first aid kit
some food stuff
blizzard bag
aa batteries
cheap aa torch
tea lights and a lighter

Right then. This has got to be the most hair brained idea I have ever heard of !!

I am not exactly sure what the purpose of this actually would be. Anyone actually finding themselves in a position of needing any of those items listed whilst U/G is a liability and should stick to walks on sunny Sunday afternoons.

Forget it. Give the dosh to FoC who can put it to proper use.

You're not a fan, are you Colonel?

I'm sure MerddinEmrys would have appreciated a spare dinghy in a box in Croesor...

This has made me think a bit: how's about underground geocaching?

I can see how something like that might be useful if someone had some kind of medical emergency and was awaiting rescue, or if there was a roof fall and someone was the wrong side of it, but events like that are, thankfully very rare and I wonder if the contents would be in any fit state to use by the time anything actually happened.

When we were working down St Peter's mine rather than haul stuff in and out every trip, I thought a stash of food and a first aid kit, candles, lighter etc might be ok left underground, just in case anyone injured themselves and couldn't climb the shaft unaided.
I vacuum packed everything in plastic bags and put it all in a plastic box but the air down there was so moist that within a few months everything was damp even inside the vacuum bags.
If you did decide to install a few of these they would take some maintaining.

Anybody venturing out into the flooded chamber at Croesor in a holy dinghy must be out of their mind!

I dread to think what the water in these boxes would be like if it wasn't used/replenished for a couple of years.

I'm with the Colonel on this one, big waste of time & effort

Most of us go equiped to suit the environment we are exploring and I can't think of anyone (that I know of) who has ever got into enough trouble to have been saved by such a stash of gear.

Can't see it being much use to the muppets who go completely unprepared & usually get rescued by the CRO, they more often get lost and/or have light faliure with no backup so could't find the stash anyway

Give the cash to the FoC 😉

Let Darwin sort them out, if you're well prepared you should have all that kind of emergency kit with you.

If it gets punted around that there are emergency stashes round various mines in the country, how long before they get trashed/stolen??

An articulate and succinct post Mr W. You raise one of the 1001 reasons why this wont happen. If anyone feels they need the false security blanket of an emergency candle and a mars bar, then maybe they should buy their own. That way, it will always be with them no matter where they go. They can stride confidently beyond portals the length of the country, in the full knowledge that they are fully prepared for all the life threatening dangers that lie therein, cos they have
a cheap torch, complete with a spare pair of AAs and a chocky bar !!!

Good Grief..... what next ? secret stashes of dry sock just on the off chance that someone get wet feet ? :bored:

I did have a think about this a while ago.
Would definitely have to be restricted to the mine-explorer community and given as clues rather than GPS.

I know the geocache community (or someone) had a few issues about geocaches being underground as it would encourage people to go into dangerous(?) places.

There is a double 5 star rated cache near Bethesda and I'm pretty sure it is a little bit dark (not been yet).

Would be good fun though

Being such a good natured fellow, tact prevented me from expressing my true feelings regarding these so called ' Mine Safety Boxes' and any comment I have made are purely directed to the concept itself and certainly not to its originators(s)

'Mine Safety boxes' reminds me of the expression ' Safety Cameras'.....

I do get the 'idea' that they would be good and maybe a hidden dinghy in CRTT may be an idea (being a unique trip).
I wouldn't like to hear of anyone getting into problems and blaming the fact that they were expecting i.e. 'a spare battery' to be at such and such a place.

Am going to have a think about the geocache thing.
Might start a new thread later... :offtopic:

While the sentiment is quite right, you can often find a spare one if you look around! Pull the string and ye shall find (assuming some clot hasn't done something daft...). Mind you, anyone going in there should take sufficient dinghies to get their group across - it's pretty daft to be going 3 hours underground on the assumption that someone has left a dinghy behind...

I think that's a very valid point...

Not wishing to throw cold water on this, but the fact that such a cache was known to exist could lead to people depending on it being there, also in this litigious bent society, what would happen if someone used something from such a cache and it was not working/broke/etc. etc. and caused a (further) accident. I think that would a be a liability most people would not want!

Ok so we dont like the idea then 🙂
the thought occured to me after i met a group who were planning on doing the crtt backwards but didnt know that it had ropes or boats ! I wouldn't want to encourage these kind of people however they were all ready underground.
Still i guess it is evolution at work.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
