Dear Daibach

Thanks for reporting this, please see this thread: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?p=10427#msg10427  for how this has been dealt with.

Unfortunately this spammer registered with a legitimate email address and so followed the site's security steps to authenticate their account. However as soon as the problem was reported to me the account was deleted, any messages from this idiot deleted from the database and a message sent to the abuse department of Yahoo (the person's internet provider) to complain about the spam.

Agreed :curse:

Running a small internet hosting company, we seem to be locked into a never ending battle with these idiot spammers.

Currently we're seeing spam accounting for 97.7% of all email through our servers, .3% virus laden and just 2% legitimate email. Filtering out all that junk at source is a hugely processor intensive and costly job.

This particular instance however is the first time I've ever seen a spammer go to the incredible effort of registering on a web site, authenticating and manually sending their junk messages one at a time. It really is very regrettable that they'll resort to these extreme measures to get their junk through.

Regard,
Simon

Why don't you hack into his Yahoo account and and change the password, do not think the idiot would know what has happened if he or she is stupid enough to use a traceable email address.

All sorts of reasons...

- It would be illegal
- I wouldn't know where to start
- He/she probably has dozens, if not hundreds of email accounts

Far better I think to deal quickly with these incidents as they occur (fortunately very infrequently) and provide the internet service providers with the relevant details in order to close accounts down correctly.

For what it's worth the IP address traced back to Africa, Ivory Coast. No surprises there.

Unfortunately spam is a huge problem at the moment.

I'm very aware something like this could dent confidence in the site, and I'd hate that to happen. But what happened here has to be very rare - spammers usually use software to send hundreds of thousands of messages in one go. This one when through the rigmarole of registering and authenticating, and then sending messages one by one to some random members.

For anybody still concerned, no security has been compromised and no personal details have been disclosed. Private messages do no reveal your email address to the sender.

Vanoord (one of the admins) has made the suggestion that new members do not automatically get access to the Private Messaging function - so this scenario can not happen again. I'll look at the additional code to implement this asap. We'll probably impose a minimum post count on the regular forum plus a manual admin upgrade to allow new members to use private messages.

Sorry you also received it Barb.

As per the service notice on the front page, the Private Message system is currently offline until additional security measures are put in place to make it even harder to abuse.

As it stands it works the same as countless other web sites and forums (you have to enter a valid email address, then authenticate with unique one-time code embedded in a link in the email) but this additional work will make it even more secure and mean that new members are not automatically given access to the PM system.

Simon, a suggestion, however i don't know if its do-able...

I have deleted 3 accounts before they were activated, and im sure yourself and Vanoord have done a lot more. With 5 (?) administrators, how about every one has to be manually verified?

Some are obvious, one of them (i cant remember the details) seemed like a reasonable e mail address but when some of the key words are googled a dodgy website was exposed, so i binned it.

It's do-able, but I think it might hinder the site too much. If an admin couldn't check the account very quickly then the person might not bother coming back.

I've already put a lot more code into the private messaging system so that access to that has to be granted manually - this will stop what happened from ever happening again.

All sites like this get a lot of bogus registrations (which we delete on an almost daily basis), but 99.9% of them are using duff email addresses so they can't authenticate and therefore can't post anything. This example over the last day used a valid email address so it was able to authenticate and post. However from this point on with PM access being manually granted once we're happy the new member is legit, they PM system is immune from this sort of abuse.
