Have been glancing through a memoir of William Jenkin !738-1820 who was the great-great grandfather of A.K Hamilton Jenkin. For many years he was the steward of the Lanhydrock family. In it he writes a short letter about soup kitchens.

“In the parish of Illogan there is a charitable institution set up to provide the industrious poor families (many miners of course) with soup they now make and deliver 5 days per week. The ingredients are as follows:

2 Bulloks heads 6/-; 14 quarts of peas 7/7
7lbs of Rice 2/11, Onions 1/6, Turnips 9d
Salt1/-, Pepper 4d, Coals and Servants 3/11

Making a total of £1:4, with which thy make 36 gallons.

Tescos better watch out.

Just out of interest have attached a couple of photos of Tehidy House (not trying to make a point of course) which was the mansion in which the Basset family resided who were the major Mineral Lords in the area. It was probably the grandest mansion in Cornwall.
