Well, Simonrl asked me to have a user journal and as I didn't go on a trip this weekend, I decided to make one up:

"Vanoord's day out

"On Bank Holiday Monday, I led a trip to a very dangerous mine. I was
accompanied by a very fearful SimonRL and Merddinemrys. It was only
because of my fortitude that they did not become snivelling wrecks.

"We started with a 350' ascent up an overhanging loose rockface, but
I've done several of these before and I can do them with my eyes
shut. The others made a nasty mess in their pants.

"About half way up the cliff, we encountered a dragon, which I killed
by looking at it in the right way. Although we ran out of rope, I
continued up the rockface using a combination of my teeth and wedging my
wedding vegetables into the rock to hold on.

"I was the first person ever to enter the mine and inside I found a
large store of TNT, a treasure chest of gems and another dragon, this
one three times larger than the first one. It ate Merddinemrys before
I clouted it on the head with a rock and then climbed down its throat
to rescue Merddinemrys, who was a little shaken to say the least.

"Shaking ourselves down, we moved on to our main objective for the day, the..."

Saturday. Blaenau. Tan-y-Grisiau. Seems familiar? Ah yes, the walk up
the cwm, over the top and into Croesor. Seems very familiar indeed!

The roster, other than CRTT 'residents' Simonrl and Vanoord was SteveM,
Barney +1, RobH and Merddinemrys. It turned out a relatively nice day
and the promised rain never materialised. The trip up was punctuated by
RobH failing to clear a bog he jumped and ending up stuck up to the knees
- one wellie was only recovered after some stirling work by Simonrl with a
paddle...

The two abseils were dispatched by the first three of us, at which point we
were overtaken by a man of few words, presumably soloing the trip. I'm
not sure how wise such an trip is, but it must require balls of steel.

For some reason I ended up doing the zip wire traverse four times - I'm
sure this was because I'm a helpful soul rather than because it's fun ;)
Onwards across bridges and flooded chambers and we burst out into
daylight perhaps 9 hours after we'd left it. The view of the sunset behind
Cnicht, with mist rolling across the mountainside as quite wondrous, well
worth the effort of getting up there.

Unless it's my imagination, the eastern twll of Rhosydd has collapsed some
more over the winter - there are several fresh-looking depressions and
one of the mill buildings has dropped by perhaps 50cm. If you're in the
area, then be very careful of the edges - there are several overhangs
and I don't think peat is renown for its structural properties...

A large thank-you, incidentally, to SteveM, for some very valiant work
in assisting as a tour guide at various points along the trip - in particular
ensuring nobody got too wet getting out of dinghies 🙂
