I have just been notified of this book due out next month the definitive history, long awaited, of Great Wheal Vor. This was Cornwall’s greatest tin producer at one time, renowned way beyond the county and yet it is relatively unknown today. Wheal Vor was so productive that it justified the smelting its own tin. The book runs to 600 pages and is written by Tony Bennett, who has great knowledge and experience of Cornish Mining, not least through his involvement in the Rosevale Mine at Zennor. It contains a detailed history of the mine, including a prolonged court case which may have inspired Charles Dickens, as well as information on the way the mine was worked, its geology and what remains on the ground. Sir Tim Smit of the Eden Project has contributed an Introduction.

Great Wheal Vor will be available from October as a large format paperback at £27.00, with a limited edition of 100 hardback copies at £47.00, . The book has been generously sponsored by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Office., I'm offering post free on advance orders

This will be a major landmark in the literature of Cornish mining - can't wait.

Not convinced by the Tim Smit bit - he always strikes me as a bit of a knob.

My sentiments exactly!

Will be interesting to read his conclusions on the limiting factors of the mine, whether there would be anything there worth mining still.

If a deposit anything like Vors was found today, they would be going underground to mine it tomorrow!

Going well off topic ........

The Eden Project seems to be the ultimate white elephant (with the possible exception of Heartlands) which has had to be constantly propped up with public money. Ironic as the project was initially promoted as being the great saviour of the Cornish economy. As someone who pays Cornish council tax I rather resent my hard earned money being sacrificed on the alter of Smit's vastly inflated ego.

:offtopic:

End of rant.

Is it just me or is the "Fresh Prince of Portreath's" literary style somehow familiar. For some reason I can't help but expect a yoghurt weavers rant.

Doesn't mean he isn't right though, does it?

I mean the Eden Project. Last time I visited the place the word "sustainable" was plastered everywhere, just about as sustainable as all the other sustainable s we keep propping up in our taxes.

Interesting place though.

Now to digress a little, what's happened to the original thread?

My Dad grew up at the house Wheal Vor. A must have for me !

During the 40's (late I guess) it was surveyed for reopening, which unfortunately never actually happened.
