CLIFFS CAVES AND COAL / A Short History of the Blackhalls area up to 1920 by the Blackhalls Local History Group. 2001 60 pp, many illus. Blackhalls probably got its name from crews on passing merchant ship seeing the caves in the cliffs as black holes (Blackhalls). In the grounds of The Dene there is a secret Rock Chapel fashioned out of the natural rock face. When coal mining first started the area was flooded with workers. It is rumoured that housing was so short that one family lived in one of the caves on the beach. A well known local doctor does recall delivering a baby in a cave at "The Rocks". Lead mining also gets a mention. SB New £3.00 post free in the UK.
