Thanks Chris. I will be driving straight up to Swaledale after work first thing Saturday morning and grabbing a couple of hours sleep before the trip. Looking forward to seeing you then. If the Brownley Hill Mine trip was anything to go may then this should be a good day.

Not knowing the place at all, anywhere particular in the village to meet? Is parking OK?
Is anyone planning to be in a local pub tomorrow evening? Camping midway between Gunnerside and Reeth, might be tempted to walk to either for a beer....

The best place I can think of is the Tan Hill Inn where you can camp which is not too far from Gunnerside and I am recommending it for post-mine drinks on Saturday night (hopefully they will have a band on then). In Gunnerside itself there is the King's Head. Camping is also available at Keld and I think there is also camping at Muker where you can enjoy a pint in the Farmer's Arms.

Right in the middle of the village, never had a problem so far.

I won't be camping myself though, have other plans.

Tann Hill is quite exposed as a camp site, there are plenty nearer to Gunnerside;)

But at least you will get live music and a late night at Tan Hill, do they have that sort of thing at the King's Head?

Thanks for coming yesterday everyone, some fine photos have already appeared on the AN Facebook group.

Heres an old plan I just uploaded for anyone who wanted to see it.

Many thanks for organising it Chris! Judging by the plan, there's an awful lot left to do (or presumably more accurately to dig....)

Great trip, thanks to Chris for organising. However I certainly won't be walking two miles wearing my wetsuit on a hot day again!

Well, if all the mine levels were still open there would be a trip on the scale of the Great Nenthead Traverse, coming out in Arkengarthdale. I believe it would be Sir Francis to Bunton to Brandy Bottle and the somehow across to Moulds Level.......

So yes, plenty to go at.

Chris.

Chris - where it says 'rise' or 'sump', is this just a bit going up or down? Or does it imply a connection to another section of passage?
How far can the level be forced now do you know?

Yes, generally a rise will be going up and a sump down to another level or into workings.

We got maybe 150m further on Saturday where the water was getting very deep.

I don't know how far it can actually be pushed if you're prepared to get your nose against the ceiling.

Hi Guys,
Just a note re the Nenthead traverse, which I first suggested nearly 10 years ago now, other traverses, were possible when the Nenthead mines were intact.
You could enter the system at Garrigill, walk through the hill and out through Barneycraig.
In fact when Rampgill was producing, many of the Garrigill men got to work that way.
Returning to North Yorkshire, in theory you could enter Sir Francis, go up a rise into Sir George, level, then another one into Bunton, along Old Rake, till you came to the hoppers, then, into A.D. ground and come out as mentioned at Moulds' level, or at Barras End Low level. There are other variants of this, we are lucky that Hard Level is still open and we can still exit at Brandy Bottle.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
