A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Sir Francis and Gunnerside

Date and time: 17/06/2017 / 10:00

Details: Primarily a trip to see the Sir Francis Level hydraulic engine, if time allows other levels in Gunnerside can be visited.

Can perhaps be a little flexible with start time if some people are traveling a longer distance.

If people want to make a full weekend of it and camp/beer Friday/Saturday and have a Sunday trip too, just let me know.

I have added myself to this trip as I have always wanted to see this. No wetsuit yet though - will have to obtain one before June!

You can pick up a cheap watersports wetsuit on ebay for a few quid. Doesn't matter if you trash it (which you will).

Good plan - I suppose I'll keep an eye out for promotions at places like Decathlon and Aldi.

You won't trash your wetsuit in Sir Francis Level, as it's just a mile of trudging through freezing water between waist and chest height, worth it to see the engine though. I usually wear an oversuit over my wetsuit in any case to give it some degree of protection! ;D

Chris, are you not thinking of doing the Hard Level to Brandy Bottle trip at around the same time/weekend, two birds one stone, double torture and all that?

I have seen a youtube video of this and it looks a bit grim! I am a renowned 'big girls blouse' of the highest order so may have to steel myself a bit for that 😞

As mentioned at the top, if theres the interest from the attendees to make it a full weekend trip I will happily do that on Sunday (but it is going to mean getting to a wet-wet-suit;D)

Hi, I am new to AditNow and have been doing some mine exploration with United Cavers' Exploration Team and I am also a member of Nenthead Mines Conservation Trust. I am interested in coming along to St. Francis Level on Saturday 17th June. For post-mine drinks I recommend the Tan Hill Inn where they have ample camping and room for motor caravans + live music in the evening. The pub has several photographs from St. Francis Level on display as well as some of Crackpot Cave which is also well worth a visit. I will put my name down for St. Francis Level and I am looking forward to meeting some like minded people in June. 😞

I don't need any persuading to go to Tan Hill, its one of the best pubs anywhere. 😉

Apologies to all but I am going to have to take my name off the list for this trip.

Some developing family commitments are making it increasingly apparent I'm going to struggle to make it that weekend and I'd rather give a bit of notice than drop out at the last minute.

A great shame as this has been on my list of places to see for a while and I couldn't make another trip earlier this year.

Ah well, next time I suppose 😞

I will still be able to make it. Looking forward to it, especially after the great day we had at Brownley Hill Mine.
For post-mine drinks I am suggesting Tan Hill Inn which is not far from Swaledale. They have plenty of space for camping and they also do seven en-suite rooms plus two bunkrooms. They usually have live music on on a Saturday evening.
For the classic car enthusiasts amongst you Tan Hill Inn will be a checkpoint on the Beamish Rally which takes place every Fathers' Day (this year it is the 18th of June) and features cars over 50 years old. For more info ring 01833 628246 or visit their website at:

Sounds really good. I'm an almost definite yes for Saturday - come up on Friday evening and camp or kip in the car. Got to drive back on Saturday night unfortunately.
SRT gear needed? Or just rubber clothes?
Many thanks for this!

A wetsuit and a belay belt/harness at most for the very short ladder pitch in (though it is free-climable if you've got a semi-decent reach).

A big tacklesack to carry your wetsuit in for the walk up to the mine is useful if its a scorcher.

This is the one I wanted to do this year, but I can't make it due to work commitments. If someone gets a chance to make a video of the walk in and engine room, or take some pics, it would be appreciated.

At least I'd be able to see what I'm missing.

Have a great day 😉

Meet point will be Gunnerside village at 10:00 (rather than the mine

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
