A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Sir Francis Level

Date & time: 15/05/2010 at 11:00

Details: A trip to one of the highlights of Swaledale, the engine room in Sir Francis Level which still contain cages, winding gear and a hydraulic engine from 1879.

The trip will involve a short descent on an electron ladder and a walk of about 1 mile in water up to chest deep, so a wetsuit is essential.

Photography opportunties in the engine room are plentiful.

Nearest camp site for this appears to be Usha Gap just west of Muker. Is anyone else on this trip going to be camping there Friday/Saturday night?

RockChick was looking at camping too but had mentioned Keld, drop her a PM if you want to try and co-ordinate.

Also if you're looking for any ideas for a quick blast on Friday, let me know.

on a recent trip[ there SCMC members found low Oxygen levels - maybe it was a one but recommend you check the air as you go through

on the evidence that would be wise - a combination of chest deep water and low oxygen could be a recipe for disaster . I would be interested to hear your findings as it may have been a barometric pressure change that caused the readiings. If not something has changed

I did the trip last year didn't have a sensor then & the air definately wasn't right, Will find out the reading on Sat & post it on this thread & respective mine site.

Just for referance the air monitor got down to 16.9% at the engine room.

so its quite possible with the wrong air pressure for this to drop too low and people should be aware

Yes, we had an excellent day - three (or more, for some folk) levels for the price of one 😉 AND a free morris dancing display! I'm looking forward to seeing all the photos. Many thanks to christwigg for organising the event, leading it, and even providing handouts for us all. :thumbsup:

Yes, I don't organise a Morris dancing display for just any old trip !

Just gathering together a few more photos for the trio report, will finish it off at work today. :angel:

Sounds like a good trip. A couple of questions:

1. Did you find (in Priscilla) the sump that drops down to Sir Francis?

2. At the far end of Bunton, how close do you think you were to where we got to in Hard Level in April?

1. From the map I have, I would say our way was blocked before the sump to Sir Francis.

2. The distance between the blockage on the Old Rake vein in Bunton and the part of Hard Level we were in is large, well over 1000 yards.

Excellent trip report Chris :thumbsup: with some great underground photographs - although I particularly liked the submarine captain photo at the end :lol:

On the SCMC trip the O2 meter was registering 14% and dropping in the area where you come out the deep water near the wooden box.

So the air quality seems to be very variable - weather was generally over cast, with heavy rain later that day/night.

Weather was glorious on the day we went and it only dipped below 17% for a moment or two in the chamber.
