Plenty to see on the surface but there's no underground epics to be had. Its quite a large area - where abouts are you staying?

Yeah, as RJV said you're not going to find a Cwmorthin or Nenthead, but theres plenty of good surface stuff if the weather is is nice.

The three sets of ironstone calcining kilns at Rosedale East / Rosedale West.

The cliff top alum quarries at Boulby, Loftus and Kettleness are well worth a look.

if you're desperate for something underground though, might be able to come up with as couple of little odds and ends if we know where you're staying.

If you get out towards the coast, there's the Tom Leonard mining museum in Skinningrove and the Guibal fan house on top of the cliffs to see, too.

The North York Moors Railway is very much worth a visit if you like preserved steam in action.

Cheers

Thanks to all would like to find something underground if poss , im staying just out of the moors alongside the a1! but on me m/bike so distance no prob. Been going through the site on here but theres loads to go though so far checked A- g and ayton and ayton banks look worth a visit?
PS coming from Norfolk anything underground would be welcome , we only have a few chalk mines and its taken me 26 years to find and get in three mines!!!

If you're near the A1 with transport then don't forget you could go west as well as east - Greenhow hill & Grassington Moor, Wensleydale and Swaledale aren't all that far away, and you could make the pilgrimage to Masham too....

Very little at Ayton Banks, things to see underground at Ayton but with it being an ironstone mine the air quality very quickly becomes a serious issue, a gas meter is probably wise.

As AR said if you're near the A1 you can nip over to Swaledale just as easily. Plenty of walk-in levels there we could point you at.

You can't really go wrong with a stroll up Gunnerside Gill.

Theres loads of surface stuff and Bunton Level is a nice easy starter where the water should stay under your wellies unless you push right to the very end. The beginning of Priscilla is pretty too if you can manage the crawl through the barrel (although it soon gets trickier and wetter)

Back to North Yorkshire.
You can get underground at Beckhole for maybe 15 mins but theres very little to see, the others will give you five minutes tops. Although the pub at Beck Hole is nice.
