Are there actually any ore mines still accessible within the Furness district other than the unstable Daylight Hole?

Alen Mcfadzean, the author of that book, wrote a short one on Wythburn Mine and Helvelyn which is also well worth reading.

Have a crack at Ding-Dong - well recommended, especially if you're interested in Dead Cows Heads, Whitriggs Horse Level is a bit shaky but lots to see + some nice natural stuff. Henning Valley Cave on the other side of the Valley is a bit thrutchy but fascinating.

Finally there is a large hole in between Bell Hill and the Abbatoir which is pretty interesting but rather wet this time of year.

They all share one thing in common. They are DISGUSTINGLY DIRTY! 😉

I was afraid it might. I used to keep the key for it and the last time I was in there I rather thought it didn't have long. Good easy dig though. I suspect it will have collapsed where the tunnel hits the bedrock.

Would it be worth some of us having a dig through at some point?

From Memory (its about a year ago) the timbers are suffering somewhat, but still in place and holding the entrance open. The blockage is in the form of a large run-in from the ceiling of clay mud and is something like a couple of hundred meters inbye.

You don't mean on the long adit , way inbye do you? That was always run.

Or was it at the junction at the end of the entrance adit?

Should be an easy dig then.
