I think the original name is actually Bunting - the Bunting Vein - and it has mutated to Bunton at some point in history.

Several other levels in Gunnerside Gill were named for people connected with the mines such as female relatives or managers and I'd presume this was named on a similar basis.

Not sure about the 'Bunton' bit but the 'Hush' bit is explained under the pics. πŸ™‚

Edit: Map of the adjacent 'Hushes'.

Seems to be the Ordnance Surveys mistake, its called Bunton on every OS map since the first edition, but all the mine literature and plans call it Bunting.

Methodism in Swaledale
by John Ward (1865)

Amongst the mines we may relate
Surrender, Kinnin, and Blakewaite,
With Bunting, Blind Gill, Beldi Hill,
And celebrated Swinnergill."

After my last enquiry with OS I can well believe it's one of many mistakes. πŸ˜‰

My Grandfathers Uncles worked in the gunnerside gill mines and he said that some were named after Daughters of mine owners or agents eg. Priscillar, Bunting, Barbara,Dolly.
My Grandfather made tea in the Bunting Blacksmiths shop while his uncles Simpson and Ralph were working in Priscillar and Sir Francis level around 1900.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
