Another excellent BGS photo. The caption suggests bricks, so is this a fireclay pit for making firebricks? Is that a brick-lined mineshaft being cut into in the corner of the pit? Does anyone have an idea where this might be?

They're possibly digging out ganister for firebricks, I know this was mined in various places round Halifax and the upper Don valley so that could be what they're cutting into in this pit. It certainly looks like a brick-lined shaft from a coal mine, of course if someone noted ganister when they were sinking shafts in the area I can easily see it being quarried later. Anyone got access to the second series 25"OS for Leeds?

Hmm, nothing resembling that quarry in present day Hunslet, so I'd guess filled and built on now. In general the useful coal measures were just to the south of Hunslet, hence the existence of the Middleton railway.

I'll have a look at the BGS survets in the archive next time I'm there.
