Why is it that so many mine explorers are in IT?
I have always thought it disproportionate

I've thought about this in the past. And then it occurred to me...

If I'm out in the car my clients can email and call me - the bloody dashboard reads their messages out.

If I'm out on the hill or the water my clients can email and call me.

The only place the phone doesn't ring and I'm away from email is underground

Edit - although Llion (I think) did once get a text message up on floor 4 in Cwmorthin.

Since we're talking about website issues... dunno if you've noticed that photos with "illegal" filenames refuse to show up if you click on someone's vote for one. "Steep..." by Dr J is one current example.

Fixed that bug now 🙂

Just uploaded a fix to the forum posting page as well - fixes the irritating problem where smiles popped up at the end of the message rather than at the cursor position.

It's not perfect, different browsers return the cursor to different places in the message - but it's a lot better than it was ;)

I still need to fix the b i u quote etc. these haven't worked properly for a few years 😞

Hi Simon, ever since you did that major update a few months back, I've been unable to click on & open forum threads on my 2 Android jelly bean devices - my new Kit Kat phone works fine though.
It's still possible to open threads though, by doing a long "hold" on the thread & doing an "open in new window" So not insurmountable!
Just thought I'd mention it in case any one else's seen it.
Cheers
Nigel

Thanks for the info Nigel. That's a really odd one. I know the site isn't particularly mobile friendly (that's on the cards, but it'd be a huge job so is a long, long way off) but the forum links should work fine on any device; they are bog standard HTML links. Confused!

I haven't got any Android devices to test with. I'll have to try to beg or borrow one to test this.

Wouldn't loose to much sleep over it!
As you say, it is odd & even odder it worked up to that last big update.
If it helps, both the culprit devices are V 4.1.2. One a Galaxy S2 & the other a Tab 3.
Oh & I wouldn't waste too much time making the site more mobile friendly, apart from the above "oddity" it seems fine!

Could be the specific version of Android, or manufacturer's fork thereof. If I get chance I'll give it a try on the Nexus 10 at work, though that's running 4.4.

I've just tried it in Opera Mobile Emulator and it seemed to work fine for Galaxy Tab II. However the emulator isn't perfect.

Trying to restrain myself from buying a 2nd hand 7 inch Galaxy Tab for "testing purposes"...

Edit - although Llion (I think) did once get a text message up on floor 4 in Cwmorthin.

How on earth or under it did that happen! Was always under the impression that they just won't get a signal though tons and tons of solid rock!

The one and only time I took my phone in Cwmorthin it curled up its toes and died of fright anyhow, and refused to work above ground as well for about a week after!

Yes! And I'm not joking, we were a good way underground and somebody's (I think it was Llion) phone went bong. We were doing a dig and it distracted us from a large piece of wall and roof that decided to collapse a few seconds later;)

Perhaps it was the ghost of Cwmorthin warning of danger via the mobile 😉

Yep! Also happened when we were digging out the 2nd collapse on Floor XX*
You were on holiday and I typed a text saying "We're through", stuck it in my Outbox to auto-send later and it sent it!

I have 4.2.2 on my HTC One X, I'll give the entire site a run through in the morning, see if I can spot it/narrow it down for you Simon.

Thank you :)

You'll find stacks of issues in the site at large I fear - lots of it is very old now. Only really the home page I'm worried about for this one since it seems to be a new problem!

Works fine on my Note 3 running 4.4.2

Just opening links from the homepage in the 4 main browsers, as obviously I don't have access to Samsung's included version of the browser, to try and reproduce the link issue:-

Dolphin Browser (My usual) - fine.
Stock Browser - Fine.
Chrome - Fine, but weird scaling/layout issues.
Firefox - Opens links fine, but has some scaling/layout issues.

Bear in mind that I usually set the Browser Agent to Desktop, as mobile sites tend to assume lowest common denominator, and strip lots of things out. This could explain the scaling issues, since I downloaded Chrome/Firefox to test.

I suspect that you are using the stock version of the browser that was supplied with the phone. As implied above, some are, well, unusual is generous, broken is probably a little harsh, but suffice to say, they do not always work as you expect.

Maybe download something from the play store? I like Dolphin Browser. It behaves, and renders things as I would expect to see them.

Are the 4.1 devices running Chrome mobile or the old Android browser? Just looking at some of the other comments and going by my past testing experiences at work, if it's the old Android browser that'll be the problem.

I'm using Android 2.3.6 (gingerbread) and a very old version of Boat browser on a very elderly phone. The site is working fine. Some other sites need the "open in new window" trick to follow links when the cache is full. Better to be underground than tweaking this site for ill-behaved browsers.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
