One of the founding aims of AditNow was that the site would, in time, act as a historic resource and database for mining and quarrying history. Indeed, the forum has produced some fascinating debates and has uncovered some startling finds.

There is, perhaps a criticism that can be leveled, in that - to an extent - forum threads could be considered transitory, even though they can often be found by someone searching the internet for a specific subject.

In order to address this, there will be a new feature added to the site in the next couple of months and SimonRL has already coded the basis of a system, perhaps best described as Articles.

The aim is use Articles to create a series of static pages which will then become a series of reference documents, with the option to link them to one or more mines: for example, an Article on a particular method of working could be linked from the mines at which that practice was employed.

The idea is thus not dissimilar to a 'Wiki', although in this instance it will be integrated into an existing website - and thus be able to use the existing database of mine and photographs, which will be able to be integrated into Articles in a similar method to putting them in forum posts.

The current thinking is that Articles will 'belong' to the person who created them, but that editing rights can also be given to either groups or to a list of individuals - ie if you want an Article to be edited only by two other specific people, then this will be possible and similarly if you want all registered users to be able to edit it, then that can also be done.

As the Articles system is still at a 'beta' stage (and not yet accessible through the site) there is the still the potential to make it fit the needs of the site's users. So: what do you want to see? 🙂

I don't know how complicated this would be to do, and if it is (or not thought a good idea) forget it.

How about only th original person can edit an article, but others could add notes a bit like stickies maybe?

To be honest, I don't think there's going to be a concern about who edits an Article.

One of the next stages of development will enable changes to be 'rolled back' in the same manner that Wikipedia reverts an article.

The aim is to make the Articles a collaborative work, but with the ability to specify the list of people who can edit (if required). Thus, for example, four people could work on one Article whereas others could be open to all registered users.

One example I'd cite is this thread http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?t=870 , which was amongst those subjects considered at the early stages of planning Articles. This, to my mind, would make a great reference Article and it probably does need to be opened up to some quite wide editorial rights.

Conversely, there may be some people who want to upload an Article that only they can edit: thus, a short research paper can be uploaded and published through the site.

I'd support some sort of feature that would allow 'secrecy' or privacy - If I work on a top secret dig or project, but want to record it for posterity, it would be great to be able to record it, and know that at some stage that I nominate, the info becomes public domain. I'm sure I know a couple of others at least, on this site, who would support such a strategy. All too often, people spend half their life digging something, and then after telling nobody, it disappears into folklore...

Although we all like to imagine our favourite websites will go on for ever, and I wish this one great longevity, if you write something for posterity it really ought to be published in a permanent form somewhere as well. If the idea catches on, it is not a big deal to publish a volume of transactions from time to time to put on your bookshelf. I do it for our club, and am happy to help do it for Aditnow or advise someone else if preferred. Just a thought.

Good suggestion - yes, I think the Articles system will be integrated into the AN security system, which should give the required element of privacy.

Another good suggestion - yes, this something that probably does need doing, probably on an 'as required' basis so that any articles are preserved in a non-digital form.
