I've spent this week building a hierarchal CSS based navigation for a client's web site, so I thought I'd implement it here.

Precipitated somewhat by a couple of people saying they found it awkward to find specific areas.

So a new main (left hand) menu has been implemented.

Structure is as before except under 'Mine Exploration Forum' where you will see some of the arrows point right indicating there are sub-menus, one of which 'Browse Forum' has a further sub-menu. This allows you from any page anywhere in the site to jump to a specific forum area.

Hopefully easier to use than going via the forum index page.

Over time I'll probably add some context-sensitive blocks to it to include the 'upload content' links, so it'll show the correct upload links for a mine or album on the relevant pages.

Note, there's a glitch in the menu still in Internet Explorer 6 causing white space to appear and the sub-menus to vanish. Looking into that ASAP.

Me like this!

Despite having a few reservations when I saw the "beta" version of this, this does make life easier. Thank you!

Is anybody having problems with the new navigation system? As far as I can tell it works perfectly with:

Safari
Firefox

Possibly some glitches in old versions of Mozilla.

It works perfectly on 2 out of 3 MS Internet Explorer 7 installations I've tested it on. On another one the sub-menu for 'Browse Forum' vanishes as you move down it.

I can't verify it's working on MS Internet Explorer 6 because I've only got that on an old laptop and it's flakey anyway.

On IE 6 a white bar (about half the height of a menu bar) appears when you move to the right towards a sub menu. The sub menu does appear, but as you move around the whole thing goes up and down by the height of the white bar as it appears and disappears. Is quite confusing! Makes my eyes go funny!

Until I can lock down the bug IE 6 users will have to bear with me please, fixing the issue with IE6 causes it to break in other browsers.

This is sorted now. Thankfully! Is the new menu system working for everybody? *

* If you're using NCSA Mosaic 'Noah's Ark' edition or something I don't want to know it doesn't work

Is that M NA edition the SP1 or SP2?

Seriously, it now works well and my eyes are no longer going funny! Well not due to the AN website anyway! 😉
