Came across this in a field just over the river near Allenheads and opposite the entrance to the Haugh level (a much smaller version of the Nentforce level). My first thought was that it was connected with ore dressing from the Haugh but there are no visible building remains as one would expect with ore separation.
So what is it?

and its not a buddle or horse whim circle either methinks.

My best guess is an overgrown shaft capping. If you scraped away at the litle mound, you maybe hit concrete.

This 'shape' is visible just above the centre of the frame, with the Haugh level entrance at around 25 past the hour near the bottom of the image on the other side of the burn.

No other signs of mining and to my knowledge the nearest shaft is up at Allenheads itself. Unless there is someone out there who knows different, of course!

The only mining-related thing I can think of that it might be is a crushing circle although if it was I'd expect to see a clearly defined horse walk outside of the bank. If it wasn't for the raised area inside the circular bank, I'd say it was a prehistoric roundhouse......

Is there any WW11 activity recorded in the area? The emplacement for a 40mm mobile Bofors AA looks very similar, ie a slightly domed circular plateau surrounded by a wall of sandbags, about 8m diameter. Alternatively a searchlight emplacement? They're both quite common in the south but I don't know what they would be defending up on the Pennines.

Yes, this makes sense. Similar to my 'shaft capping'. I never thought of this though.

Time to call in the Time Team. Put in trenches 1,2 & 3, find some shards of pottery and reconstruct an entire lead mining community.

Could it be an old bell pit? Theres quite a lot of them where I live and they look just like this. Just a guess mind.

I suppose you have checked old-maps.co.uk? I couldn't see anything, and the most recent map there is 1924.

Its not on the Modern Antiquarian site either which seems to be fairly comprehensive when it comes to cavemen/Druid type stuff.

I wonder if there was a "decoy" city created up in the hills - - they certainly did this for Hull and Sheffield. Fires would be lit and searchlights/anti-aircraft guns placed in an uninhabited area to try and get bombers away from cities and fool them into offloading onto marsh and moor. So, perhaps there was a fake Newcastle up here at one point....

Worthy answers all of them, but the total lack of further clues still leaves me in the dark (if only ..... haven't been underground for over a month, but now that the snow has thawed to 4 feet deep, maybe there's chance eh, James?!!).
I'll have to put some feelers out amongst the local historians on this one.
