Great pics and notes. Isn't it unbelievable how centuries (and therefore generations) of endeavours at a place like this have been literally erased.

It seems that politicians are somehow ashamed of our history

It is a great shame so much has been lost; many collieries in my area (West Yorks) have so completely disappeared that many 'under 30s' don't even know they were there - despite the fact that the community they live in wouldn't exist had the pit not been there in the first place.

Great photographs. When did the mine close and when was the site cleared?

I may be a year out but I think Manor closed in 1982. Because of the near city-centre location (and presumably the value of the land) the site was cleared fairly quickly.

Thanks Ncbnik. I moved to the Wakefield area from Cumbria in 1986. I spent some of my free time visiting the ever receeding remains of the coal industry in the area. I remember seeing the 'mine' shown on my 'new' OS map but could never seem to find anything. It's inner city location intrigued me!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
