I wondered if anyone has any interesting information about Nicholas Twigge and family who were influential in 1700s - 1800s. The family were tenants at Holme Hall in Bakewell and Nicholas bought the Broadlow Ash Estate near Dovedale. Tried to PM Sougher who appears to have distant relatives to Nicholas but without success. I'm currently researching Twigges (partly for personal geneology reasons) and in particular for knowledge about their mining enterprises in Derbyshire & Wales. Thanks for any assistance & for taking the time to read this message.

Sougher is no longer with us unfortunately. Jim Rieuwerts and/or Lynn Willies may have published something in the past, in particular Lynn's work on the Barkers and the Wyatts may mention mines in which the Twigges had an interest.

I would have replied yesterday afternoon, but t'internet collapsed in Sheffield for a while...:curse:

There are some mentions of Nicholas Twigge in Jim's last book, Adventurers in the Lead Trade which I collaborated with him on, as he was a close business associate (and cousin, I believe) of John Thornhill of Stanton Hall:

Jim's research in the Stanton archive found numerous mentions to the Twigge activities, but whether any further light beyond what's in the book can be shed, I have no idea. I can certainly pass on a message?

Thanks so much for your help & what a shame I've missed Sougher - he mentioned that he was related in someway in one of his forum posts & he seemed to have a lot of knowledge not available anywhere else. I've spoken to Jim already but wondered if anyone else had gleaned knowledge about the family before I start work in earnest! There's much information available & hoping to draw it together next year - thought it would be a month or two project but seems to be gathering momentum. Really appreciating you replying to my request for information & thoughts are with Sougher..I feel we would have had a lot to chat about.

ah, apologies, that makes two of us then...we ladies would have had a good chat.

Nicholas Twigge was nephew to Thornhill. His mother was Thornhill's sister & in true Derbyshire style he went on to marry his first cousin who was also a Thornhill from Stanton Hall... So when he was in business with Thornhill Jnr (Henry) this was his brother-in-law and first cousin. Therefore the link to Thornhill family is a lot stronger than you'd think.
