Hey guys,
I know the question of which camera is best is one that regularly comes up on this site, but I want someone’s opinion on the smaller £200ish bracket cameras. I’ve been looking at the Canon Waterproof D10 (which I think I’ve seen someone using- Rich would that be you?). I’ve just been told that they’ve stopped making them however, and no one seems to know what’s going to replace it! So suddenly my vague ponderings have a bit of urgency as suppliers which still have the D10 are rapidly dwindling!!
😮
Before anyone says it- yes I know I have my SLR, which is great, but as proven in Yould’s- it’s not coming on tight trips!!
Thanks! :flowers:

Nope, that's Chris. I have a Canon SX130 which will soon break even if you keep it in its packaging...
The D10 gives you pretty much fully manual settings up to a 15 second exposure.

Another option is the Lumix FT2 which Blackshiver has if you've met him - an extremely bombproof camera. I don't think that the Lumix has manual settings but will let you do a starry sky exposure of up to a minute in 15 second intervals though I'd probably look into that rather than taking my word for it.

I have a D10, I bought it for (to quote my favourite Chinese mining lamp salesman) "foul and disgusting places". I haven't used it yet though 😢 Clearly I haven't been anywhere sufficiently foul or disgusting ;)

The camera of Blackshiver that Rich mentioned looked very nice. I wouldn't have believed it was a waterproof camera to look at it, it looked completely normal and more slimline than the D10.

If you fancy popping back over to Derbyshire I could introduce you to Long Tor Grotto at Matlock Bath, which I think will fulfil the foul and disgusting criteria.

The D10 works quite nicely underwater, this I doknow

Think I may have taken one underground photograph with it - did I do the CRTT sometime last summer/autumn? - and it wasn't bad.

Then again, that might have been my wee Ixus.

I don't remember, it's been a long month... :surrender:

Hmmm, that Lumix FT2 does look very nice. Anyone else use them?

Yes, its me with the D10.

I threw it at speed into muddy water on Tuesday when a rotten ladder collapsed on someones head and its absolutely fine. (oh, so is he by the way)
No major issues with it, just need to remember to fix the focus at infinity for most light painting.

I've seen the result blackshiver got straight off the bat with his Lumix FT2 and suspect it might beat the D10 on picture quality.

The thing is, all modern cameras whether they cost 50 quid or 500 quid take an acceptable photograph nowadays , the most critical factor is the light that was used in accompaniment.

On the day Blackshiver took his photos he'd co-opted Simon's WiseLED so his photos were always going to come out well.

Might be worth waiting till you can see them both together which hopefully will be quite soon.

Good point.

Next time we see him i'll see if we can do a few shots simultaniously for comparison.

That worked well for me in Fferna... Lights up whole chambers, but is a bit of a sizeable beast.

I'm temted to buy one of these and give it a go, the specs look quite good, have some very wet levels to do soon, certainly wouldn't want to use my LX3 in these, had my tripod nearly float away once or twice before in deep running water!

The management thanks you for your co operation.

If you are interested in it- then buy it quick! It seems (like the Canon D10) that a replacement is out/coming soon, so this version is increasingly hard to get hold of. I’ve no idea what the replacement is like. I had a look at the websites which list it for sale- most of them say when you try to order it that it’s out of stock. :curse:

I’ve given in and just gone for it (we’ll see whether I regret this or not!!) but I really did struggle to find a supplier (and the pretty blue one was impossible!!!) Hopefully it’ll get delivered in a few days- I’ll let you know what I think of it! 🙂

You need to use a "comedy" tripod... Benbo Trekker MK1, If that floats away, you have no chance!

It's christened, wisely, the laughs I got showing up with that to wander around an abandoned asylum for the day were priceless. I'm still determined to drag it into a mine for the day just for a laugh. I just need to find a sherpa to carry it first.
