I'm toying with the idea of getting a new camera if Santa is kind and gives me some cash.

Has anyone got any practical experience of either of the above underground ?

Both are allegedly waterproof, shockproof and have a decent long exposure but any thoughts of whether they are actually mineproof would be appreciated.

I would have thought the question is not are they mineproof, but are they christwigg proof? They both look like they could easily pop out of a wet hand like a bar of soap.

I'd say the ergonomics of compacts are they main point against them for underground use. Tiny buttons, commonly used features hidden in menus, all that sort of stuff.

You can get Nikon F4s for a couple of hundred quid these days and they are built to survive jungles, war zones, deserts etc. And without lens and battery they weigh a mere 4lb.

I can vouch for Nikon's not being particulary "mine proof" or indeed "Richard" proof. He managed to bounce his Nikon off my head when I was half way down the 50m "Bitch Pitch" in JH.
The bits at the bottom were not a pretty sight.

Vanoord and Mountainpenguin both have the Canon D10. I think they're both pretty impressed with it.

Can't comment on the DMC-TS1, but I think my Lumix DMC-GF1 is awesome 🙂

I bet your camera is excellent and would love to see some Ratgoed SRT pictures from it as proof.

Er, yes sorry. That was my Canon though, I killed the Nikon way before then. The specs on that Canon are only marginally better than on mine Chris and thats a lot more money.

Yes, but for me the big selling point was the non-protruding lens which has been the downfall of both my previous two Canons no matter how careful I try to be with them.

Looks great, but I don't think Santa is going to be that generous and I would only chuck the poor thing in mud and be very upset.

I have a Lumix FT2, the updated version (TS2 in the states). Can't fault it.
I'd have gone for the Canon if CHDK had been available when I bought my camera, however having seen a canon D10 in the flesh, I'll stick with the lumix; the Canon is too bulky whereas the lumix fits in my breast pocket and I hardly notice it's there.

I'm assuming you've seen the dpreview group test of waterproof cameras? The Canon comes out as a pretty clear winner.

I retract my tiny buttons comment, as the buttons on the Canon are designed to be used with gloves on. Also, a small Pelicase costs nowt and would protect it from serious knocks in crawls etc.

There's a CHDK beta version for it which is a plus. Only downside, 35mm wide angle.

Yeah, that was what I used to eliminate the others because none of them did more than 4 seconds exposure.

Can't see there is much of a contest. You're familiar with Canons. Powershots and G series are always top of the bunch.

Can you ask if Santa has a BOGOF on them at the moment please?

very impressed with my D10
also its possbile to do extra bits with it due to cdhk.
With that you can do longer exposures and have a handy zebra mode in the view finder.

The main pain is the lack of a real apature and no cap for the lens.

Lovely cameras though and hopefully a new year treat for myself though strictly for nice, dry, friendly mines only.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
