Hi,

Im looking for a new harness as my old petzl jobby is just so uncomfy!

I am looking at this one -

http://www.megagrip.co.uk/products/Caving/caving_harnesses_tecnibatpic.htm

Or the singing rock "digger" harness.

Now Ive read reviews etc on the digger harness and they dont seem to rate too highly due to stiff webbing making it impossible to adjust while wet and muddy etc.

Also the equipment loops seem to be of no use, and the side adjustment straps dig into your hips.

Is it really that bad?

Has anyone used the technibat stuff? It seems to get good reviews online!

I also looked at the MTDE stuff but the bum strap that gets caught on everything and makes climbing hard put me off. Is there any others that I should consider?

Looks quite comfy, but any adjustment on the (black) buttock straps?

I love my MTDE amazonia, comfy bit of kit. Don't know how people are getting the bum strap stuck on things, climbing with their arse?

I think its a case of finding what works for you, as everyone has their preference.
FILTH - Think this is a playground? Think again...

Oh yeah of course it is, but all the reviews of the singing rock mention how much of a pain it is to use when dirty etc. So was wondering if anyone had heard anything similar on the technibat?

They say that during climbing the bum strap gets caught underneath their legs and makes iit difficult?!? This was off a caving forum so obviously the uses are slightly different!

Have never worn one of the Singing Rock harnesses so can't comment upon what its like to wear however have tried to adjust someone else's for them & it was an absolute nightmare for the exact reasons you give.

Not such a problem if you always wear the same kit but potentially a major pain in the arse if you might wear it over shorts & t-shirt one day, then furry & oversuit the next!

Don't know anything about the Technibat but I wouldn't say that I could generally differentiate between the type of movements done in a harness caving or mine-exploring. It's probably fine, think a lot of the problems people have with kit comes down to them not using it properly or enough to get used to it...

It is the MDTE equipment that people struggle to free climb in etc :)

I am swinging towards the technibat, as I havent found any bad reviews lol

I've used all sorts of harnesses, including the digger and I fell in love with my old caving supplies one. It is basically fully adjustable and simple, in my estimation, you want something which is not like a petzl nappy (industrial jobby), you want it strong, simple and fit for purpose.

On the back of this, I'd go for a Petzl Superadvanti.

If I recall correctly, the singing rock was made out of some nasty material which was stiff as hell. I also didn't like the metal loopy things your D Ring attatched to, they wore the inside of the ring unduly which to my mind was bad design.

Bloody legislation is responsible for Caving Supplies no longer making some excellent products.

I have an older purple super avanti now and its a pile of ****, impossible to adjust the waist strap yourself, and cuts into the back of your legs on long free hanging pitches.

So ideally wanted a change, the more I hear about the singing rock one the less I want one! I like that the technibat has the straps for holding the leg loops in position!

Looks like I'd better start looking for another old stock caving supplies one then. Mine is great. I'm surprised the superadvanti is bad, it's very similar to the CS one. Ahh. The CS some has "ar$e straps" which hold the leg loops in the right place. In hindsight, without these, it would probably be a POS.

Reclaimed seatbelts and a heavy duty sewing machine like wot old fashioned cobblers use, design your own 😉

My first harness was a "daiper" made from 2" webbing and sewed by a cobbler, did many a hundred feet on it.

No Ta haha!

Stuey, yes without the straps to hold the leg loops up they slide down into all kinds of uncomfortable positions!

My red Superavanti is generally fine but the webbing has creased and now pinches my inner thigh so such that a couple of long pitches will leave me bruised.

If you go for the technibat one, do post up a review, i'll be shopping sometime soon.

Cheers

Try ironing it on a gentle (nylon) heat.
or pad it out with pipe insulation.

I find even when straight it is cutting into the backs of my legs enough to warrant expending on a new one. It is very uncomfortable, I was doing some gardening and involved been sat in the harness for about 30minutes, I could hardly stand up once I reached the bottom due to not been able to feel my legs at all!

I was using a NOS Caving Supplies harness for a while. It was a great harness however I always felt slightly edgy that I was using a twenty year old harness.

The CS scored over the Petzl superavanti I had been using in that it used wider webbing and was a lot more comfy

These days I use a Petzl Falcon Ascent which is extremely comfy. The downside is the price which is around £90.

I have recently been 'pressured' into renewing my SRT kit.

The old kit was Caving Supplies, yes build like a you know what but heavy and bulky to carry and a chest harness that would suit a bondage enthusiast. The Petzl sit harnesses appear flimsy compared to the CS but a lot less bulk to carry and most certainly up to the job. Kit wont last for ever and if its over 15 years old as was mine it needs dumping. Common sense.

So what have you replaced the CS kit with and how do you rate it?

BHaving got used to equipment loops on my climbing harness, I sewed equipment loops on my mining harness and have found them incredibly useful when pegging, bolting and climbing underground.

If you're pushing new stuff, you'll find equipment loops very useful.

Even when following existing routes, equipment loops are useful - lets you keep the tackle sack either on your back on dangling beneath you, and enables the rigging gear to be kept separate to the rope when you're on pitches.

That's my two penn'orth.

Super Avanti and a Torse but too early days to give evaluation. I dont do a lot of SRT actually and what I do tends to be the same old regular pitches like Talybont etc

I still rate the CS sit harness though, its just its age.

The chest harness was ridiculous. I have even had second thoughts re my comment about possible appeal to bondage enthusiasts, you would have to be really sick to want to wear somthing like that

Equipment loops on a harness are a real boon when bolting or working complex rigging, but can get caught up on all sorts of stuff at other times.
My work around for this is simple and cheap. Use a nylon cable tie attached to the waistband when you need a loop for your gear, and when you don't just clip it off. You can also have as many as you like/can carry/pose with etc.
