Having spent many happy hours down Smallcleugh in the early 80's I was wondering what the latest situation was regarding entry. The portal has obviously been gated and 'improved' and surrounded by good old health and safety signs ( all good mines should be blighted by them - they don't draw attention!)

This is actually the portal of the newly excavated Thompsons Level just opposite Smallcleugh. Work is ongoing hence all of the H&S signs.

I never knew it was there, might turn out to be quite interesting that one!
Access in Nenthead is still a doddle, the gates are top hinged, just lift them up and off you go.
I know Middlecleugh has been locked whilst work is in progress and I presume this one is the same?
Nice to see the heritage trust putting some effort into the mines themselves rather than just the centre at the bottom of the site

Not been down it, but have spoken with someone who has, apparently does not go that far and ultimately is a collapse. Locked whilst doing archeology.

The level was marked and must have been 'open' or at least the adit visible in the 70's as it is on Peter Jacksons Smallcleugh plan.

Went in many years ago when the entrance was covered with rocks, waist deep water for about 20yds to a fall where the arching meets bedrock. Goes in a bit further now through very 'blocky' sandstone to a complete fall - possibly an infilled shaft as there are bits of timber in it. Rather muddy, especialy if you should, for 'some' reason need to lay on your back!!!
The level is shown on the plan on page 11 of Martin Critchley's Nenthead Mines book (1998 edition only). Intersects Caplecleugh North vein & Carrs Vein.

still locked as of 29/12/07 but looks better now some of the mud has gone.

It is locked... but there is about a foot of space under the bottom of the gate

ewe..i nearly lost a welly in that stuff before they gated it propper i dread to think what id leave behind if i lay down in it,it would be nice to see how far it goes though theres a couple of shafts higher up that might connect to it.

if its a hole explore it...
