Sorry, another BBC news link, but if anybody missed this:

Quote:

A rare blue diamond has sold for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.5m; £6.2m) at auction in Geneva.

It weighs 7.03 carats, is smaller than a penny piece, and is one of only a handful of blue diamonds in existence.

If you think about the inhumane working conditions in places like these and brazil. It is dirty money, i hered about this on the radio last week and wondered how if i was on holiday and found it how i would sell it without having to deal with all those dodgy traders/arms smugglers. Rio tinto is one company that has a long dirty history.

Its off topic but the photographer Sebastian Salgado has some fantastic mining photos

I have no idea about current working conditions elsewhere, but last week we visited Cullinan diamond mine near Joberg and spent nearly three hours underground. The entire operation was very impressive and nothing we saw could be criticised in any way.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
