Hello everyone.

Am planning a visit to the above and was wondering if anyone could tell me how big the mine itself is , I see on a photo it’s named as a small mine , was just wondering if there is a best place to park without upsetting any locals , I am most interested in walking the quarry workings as shall be with my son but certainly want to look inside .

From the parking side of things I can see a turning triangle area before a gravel road with a bench on google earth it shows cars parked there ?

Any information will be greatly appreciated

Thanks Tom

Can only comment on the parking from the Haweswater/Mardale Head side which is ample. Lovely walking round there, definitely plan it as a walk though there's only a limited amount u/g and take the lightest helmet/light combo you have.

Hi Tom,

There is also parking for a small number of cars at the head of Longsleddale at Sadgill (south side of Wrengill), this is where I usually park when heading up that way.

As for Wrengill itself, it's a very interesting place but as mentioned above, there's really not a lot of underground stuff there to see. Still worth a visit though!

Thanks for the replies everybody.

It’s a day out for me and my son really it looks a lovely walk with him only being 9 , never has been in a mine before I think it’s a good option for him , now my 6 year old begging to join in also ! they are so interested in seeing what I do when I go out , they are both very good walkers so no issues there .

Ill see how it goes am hoping to take them cathedral cavern also will be a nice family day out:thumbsup:

Wrengill isn’t an easy site to explore or understand. There are some tricky slippery paths, above high drops and steep, fast flowing water and some unstable areas of spoil. The walk up from Sadgill is on a Byway, but steep and slippery in places. It can be very exposed in poor weather and not a place to visit on a windy, wet, winters day. Here are some photos that may give you an idea of the place.

If you are going to Cathedral Quarry, well worth exploring the numerous slate quarries in the Tilberthwaite Valley and Betsy Crag area. There are days worth of exploring here and each quarry working has its own character and interest. There are also copper mines in the vicinity which add interest. As will all old quarries, there are dangers here, with unstable, slippery spoil heaps and some very large drops.

Was at Wrengill the other day, its a lovely place, as already said not much underground only one chamber that looks like it goes any distance but you would have to get your feet wet trying to get to it.

Very nice waterfall in the upper pit which drops below rocks and emerges at the water tunnel in the next pit over.

There is parking for about 8 cars at Sadgill at the start of the Bridleway and a voluntary donations box for parking.

Pictures here if you want a look
