Just entered the above mine in the DB and the list of the men tragically killed http://genealogytrails.com/ill/franklin/1914royaltonmine.html  is a stark reminder of the vast array of different ethnic groups that worked the American coalfields.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Yes it's a pity that. They have one or two others, such as the Cherry disaster http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Cherry-Coal-Mine-2/  but the couple I've looked at aren't that brilliant.
