The complex subject of labour movement and migration was touched upon recently in another thread. One of the areas that were settled in their thousands by the Cornish was present day Wisconsin.
The discovery there of Upper Mississippi (Wisconsin) lead deposits around the 1830s led to an influx of prospectors ready to grab the land and develop the mining and agricultural potential that existed.

Mineral Point is justly proud of its Cornish connection and is twinned with Redruth and many exchange visits have taken place over the years. They even have an annual Cornish Fest (I believe Ginster lost the pasty contract). More to the point some of the old Cornish architecture has been restored in recent years. Originally these buildings dated c. 1830s.
