Found this site whilst looking for something else (French Slate!). Photographs (historic, surface, and underground) location maps, some underground plans and links to NG locomotives etc. (Including some beautiful examples of early Deutz machines) Fascinating.

I've got a mate who lives in Luxembourg, always meant to go looking for the iron mines too, but so far have only ever ended up on the beer in Luxembourg city.

We had a visit to Luxembourg 3 years ago to look at iron mines.
Each country (France, Lux, Belgium) all have their national iron mine museums within a few miles of each other plus several good private museums and railways. Plenty to see for at least a week.

There is a rather nice slate museum/mine - Au couer de l'Ardoise here 49.81309,5.272887 on Google maps.

Luxembourg, land of surprises! I did know about the iron mines, I visited one on an international weekend from CSM in the 70s, but slate is a new one on me.

Then again, I'm currently on a construction barge registered under an American "special construction" certificate with a home port of Luxembourg... I confess that the glories of its rocky, windswept shores and sweeping beaches have so far evaded my attention..

Perfect timing. Kate and I are planning a trip to Germany this year and need a stop off point on the way. It just needs some carefull planing and diplomacy now . . .

Would welcome tips from others on Mining Museums worth visiting in Germany. The Munich museum is aready on the itinery.

The Technology Museum in Berlin is excellent if you happen to head that way over. Only an extremely small amount of mining exhibits but the train and aviation sections are first rate. Nearly as good as the sausages and beer in their cafe in fact...

Obviously Bochum - The main German mining museum situated in the Ruhr.

Harz Mountains - Rammelsberg Mine (at Goslar), the Ober Harz Bergbau Museum (at Clausthal-Zellerfeld) and Grube Samson Mine (at Sank Andresberg). There are several other show mines in the area which I haven't visited.

Just over the border, if you follow the Mosel (a worthwhile trip in itself) you can detour off to the Hunsruck. This is an area where there was a number of slate mines.

For those interested in such things, the slates are a fantastic fossil location.

If anyone has ever seen the film Heimat, there are a couple of scenes that were filmed underground in one of the old mines.

Here's one of the lesser known mining museums/show mines - not far from Hanover and the Harz Mountains..

Sorry, it's run by enthusiasts and they haven't the budget for an English version.

They do two underground tours, one with the "Grubenbahn" and another, 3-hour, tour on foot for groups of up to a maximum of 10 people.
