My guess that this is an old stone mine, c AD 1800 assuming the AD 1745 inscription is a fake.

Came across this about 10 years ago but had no tackle or anything else for that matter as was visiting the Roman city of Gortins (Fabulous Basilica & the law stones there are well good) .... a local told me of the stone quarry under the ground... Thanks for posting, know where to go next time... Crete is full of caves and small levels, some of the caves have candles or flame torches for you to visit the underground, we know one near Kokkini Hani that is natural and 250feet in with ease and much longer if pushed... and the local govt leave candles in the entrance for you to explore :lol: !!!

That looks like a classic stone quarry, but why should the dates not be genuine?

Apart from the graffiti you could be in Box or Browns Folly.
