Passed through the Pyrenees today (west central) and noticed slate outcrops at the side of the road. Very purple in colour. Wonder if there was any slate industry in the area. No time to investigate though 😞 and too hot anyway 🙂

There is quite a lot of slate quarrying in parts of Spain, though non underground as far as I know. I remember when travelling to Tenerife seeing several large slate quarries from the plane (where else).

Slate is/was? quarried in Galicia NW Spain. I knew a couple from there who had moved to Bethesda, they seemed to feel at home!

I did see some surface workings that looked like gravity mills in the Spanish Pyrenees near Bossost (very close to the French Border). Unfortunately I couldn't stop to explore. Anyone got any info?

no problem,
I tried searching the spanish for "slate quarry" and not a lot came up really, clearly its not that big a thing over there in terms of interest. Itd be interesting to have a look there one day though.
