Hello, I live near Craigend brickworks and walk round it quite often, this got me thinking about how many brickworks remain in Scotland.

The majority of them have been demolished, the few that remain are crumbling away.

It would be nice to try and save something as a reminder to the once booming brick industry.

Ones I can think of are Craigend, Jawcraig and Dunaskin I'm sure there are many I dont know about though.

Cheers

A Hoffman kiln and chimney is preserved at Prestongrange Industrial Museum, with the sites of several circular kilns.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Raeburn Brick at Blantyre is still working, the only active brickworks left in Scotland. As mentioned above the kiln at Prestongrange is preserved. As you know Craigend is a ruin, Jawcraigs has been half demolished and last time I looked the kiln shed was used by a farmer, and Dunaskin is an abandoned museum which is gradually falling apart.

Quite a few others have disappeared in the past few years - Tannochside (Ibstock), Wemyss, Manuel, Candie, Skares, Cruden Bay, Hamilton, Mayfield and Etna (both Caradale) have been cleared completely. There's an empty shell left at Fordmouth (Afton) and a ruin at Anniston. There are a couple of beehive kilns left at Inchcoonans (Errol Brick) although the site's used for other things. The sheds at Bothwell Park and also Cadder (Centurion) are used for other purposes now.
