There is a possibility I may be spending much of January in Inverness. Who knows how much spare time I will have but I expect there will be some.

Anything I should be visiting whilst I'm there?

I can't work out how to view mines in a particular area without knowing the name of at least one of them.....

Mines, Quarries and Sites tab, Country - UK, OS map Sheet (NJ?), choose list/map type - seems to work.

The veins were on the Lovat (Fraser) estates and were mined on a small scale during the first half of the 19th. century, together with a graphite seam at Loch a’ Mhuillidh in Glen Strathfarrer. The vein near Struy Lodge is about twenty inches thick, but the largest working was at the west end of Loch na Meine (Loch of the Ore) and the old shaft and surface workings, together with the remains of the engine houses and sluices can still be made out.

I have heard that there were mica mines near Muir of Ord but have not established the exact location. My late uncle had actually seen them.

I would contact the Grampian, they should be able to supply some information on mines in the area.

It hasn't worked for me for a long time - I presumed Simon was overhauling it along with other parts of the site.

Just tested it on my phone (away at present so can't test in different browsers on a computer) and it worked fine.

Why happens when you click on a square? E.g.click on SN. It should give you the list. But do you get nothing? Or an error message?

Works for me also, what's more I've just learned a bit more about how to use the site, thanks Chris.

I suspect it isn't working for people who've got adblockers enabled on the page.

Quite possibly, or could be an issue with certain browsers. It's a bog standard old fashioned imagemap though, no JS or anything like that.

I've tried it on Firefox (v49.0.2) with AdBlock Plus variously enabled or disabled. The OS imagemap and links to the calendar, photo competition etc are only active with AdBlockPlus disabled.

I am using Chrome and yes, I do have an adblocker.

When I position cursor over the map nothing happens at all. It is just a set of black grid squares.

If you left-click on the adblocker icon at the top right of screen, and then select 'don't run on pages on this domain', then the GR squares map should work for you.

Thanks for testing and resolving that Skimble :)

Blocking in-site links... What an over zealous bit of software 😞

An excellent idea, I may just do that once my plans become more concrete.

I may be there on a training course and it's likely to be cheaper to stay up weekends than travel up and down.

Might be a bit fresh up there in January mind?
