It hasn't yet been uploaded to BBC iPlayer but BBC2 Scotland had an hour long documentary this evening presented by Professor Iain Stewart dedicated to the West Lothian oil shale mining and processing industry

http://bbc.in/1ZCnSXs

Essentially a social and economic history of the shale industry and it's legacy including some nice mine exploration footage courtesy of Tina Doyle (TeEnZiE of youtube fame).

Well worth viewing

The website is really superb and an amazing archive of industrial and social history.

I would also recommend Harry Knox's excellent volume "The Scottish Shale Oil Industry & Mineral Railways" published by the good people at Lightmoor Press:

http://lightmoor.co.uk/view_book.php?ref=L9730§ion=CatIndustrial

This provides a comprehensive review of the entire industry drawing heavily on the resourses of the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry who run the aforementioned website.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
