Hi Jim and mine followers,
I can confirm that the plant, photographed, here was still on site, 18 months ago, when we last visited Iona.
The whole area, has been tactfully, preserved, and the remaining plant has been painted, and so should last a few more years yet.
There has also been some attempt, to restore the path down to the quarry from the cliff above, however it is not the easiest place to find as the "paths" are rather non existent!

Hi John,

Thanks for the update, one of a few of John and Hilda's outliers when they spent the summers up at Loch Arkaig in the 80's and 90's

Is that product placement Mr Fellows or a piece of post-ironic spelling error to prove capitalism is in terminal decline.

I've done my research in my study desk and it's called Tipp-Ex (created by one of the Monkees mums??)

Just looked it up, I think the original was spelled as below?

Tippex
't?p?ks/
BRITISHtrademark
noun
1.
a type of correction fluid.
verb
1.
delete with correction fluid.
"go home and Tippex your friends' names out of your address book"

I am surprised that it is still sold.

I can remember seeing on TV piles of typewriters being thrown on a scrapheap. How times change.

Allegedly some people (Russians?) are retaining typewriters so that key loggers and other spying systems can not intercept them.

Personally I still rely on the tin foil hat. 😢

I always assumed Tippex was a motor vehicle re-assembly aid, such as, marking cambelt running direction etc.

Tppex was actually intended for sniffing during maths lessons but the fun was stopped when they re-formulated it to remove the trichloroethane.

Yes!
I can remember this, we all did it. I can remember fitting a new cam belt to a BMW 323i, 1982 Y suffix, quite a feat.
I was running it myself and was actually one of the best cars I ever had.

We must have been simpler folk in Middlesbrough, we kept amused in the drone of the physics lab by generating "shall we say" graphs as that is how he started many sentences on a Friday afternoon double.

Such was the benefit of the grammar school system.:smartass:

Back on topic,
Jim your Dad and mum would have had to stay on Iona or Mull, to visit the Marble quarry.
Robert and I also took the trip to Fingal's cave, whilst we were there.
I can honestly say it was extremely impressive, and well worth the roller coaster of a sail to get there!
You might also find photos of this in your dad's collection

I must have missed this when I visited Iona - mind you I think I was about 10 at the time!

I'm not sure they made a trip to Fingal's Cave, and I haven't, I apparently wrote the poem though, but the walk on the Ross of Mull from Carsaig to the Carsaig Arches is also a pretty fine display of columnar basalt and echoing caves, without the sea bit. I hope they had Mendelssohn's music on whilst they made the crossing.

Certainly, the columns are impressive at Carsaig Arches, but actually the road down to Carsaig Bay takes some beating!
Parking here is a problem, and then there is the 3 mile walk to the arches.
The views towards Jura, are also stunning.
If the weather is ok, and you do not mind single tracked roads, Mull is a great place to visit.
You can, as we do, take in the Stontian mines enroute.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
