Aberfoyle Slate Quarries NGR NN 503 030 Landranger Aberfoyle
A small, probably man-made, tunnel at the old is reputed by the climbing fraternity to lead into a 200ft deep system of fissure caves. A narrow shaft about 20ft deep is reputed to lead into an extensive underground system in the vicinity of N.G.R. NN 515013. Several unsuccessful attempts have been made to locate this arrangement.
Jeffreys, Alan 2008 Mines in Scotland 7
Aberfoyle NGR NS 498 984 & NS 513 982 Barytes was worked at Arndrum and Gartloaning about 1880. The precise location of these mines is difficult to find due to heavy afforrestation of the area. The Geological Survey (1915) gives the location of the Arndrum Mines as being 2½ miles S.W. from Aberfoyle Station and the Gartloaning Mines as 600 yards N.W. of Gartloaning Farm.
The word `Lead’ is shown on the map at NGR NN 498 951.
It is of interest to note that in 1877, Jules Verne published his book 'The Child of the Cavern', which is a tale of a massive mine, part natural, at Aberfoyle, which covered the counties of Dumbarton, Stirling and Renfrew. The book is alleged to have been inspired by a visit Verne made to caverns at Aberfoyle.

Newtyle North Quarry Cave NGR NO 045 413 Landranger 53 Dunkeld
Colin McLeod writes:
I had more success with the cave at Newtyle North Quarry near Dunkeld - the one that had a tinker's legend that it contained a tunnel leading to Dunkeld. I visited it on 3 February. A track from the A984 leads up to the quarry, and a steep indistinct path below the south-east face of the quarry leads to the cave above a jumble of huge boulders. As described in 'Scottish slate quarries', it is a cave about 20 m deep created by quarrying, tapering towards its inner end. The entrance is partly blocked by a cone of quarry waste, so the floor slopes steeply downwards for its whole length. Despite this, due to its high ceiling and large arched entrance, it is very open and light - no torch required. It is much used by climbers for practising overhangs, and the ceiling is covered by their permanently-fixed equipment.
Fleming, Maurice, 1995 The Ghost o’Mause and other tales and traditions of East Perthshire. With a forward by Sir William Macphersson of Cluny. Edinburgh, The Mercat Press. 94-95 The Clutching Hand. Two children get lost in a tunnel and the rats ate one of them, so all that was left was a hand. Tinkers use to live in the entrance to this tunnel It is easy to see how they might have used a story like this to deter their children from playing in it.

Perth Prison Tunnels NGR NO 122 211 Landranger Perth
An intricate system of tunnels leads from Perth prison to a landing stage on the River Forth. These tunnels were connected during the Napoleonic wars and were arranged to transport prisoners of war to different parts of the prison. The one tunnel from the landing stage leads to a round house, where the passage splits; at this point the prisoners were segregated and marched along the separate tunnels. A series of round houses and further intersections on the branch tunnels further sub-divided the prisoners, until very small groups were herded directly into their cells. The system is still 'open' but, for obvious reasons, is heavily gated at regular intervals.
