Found it today, bit to dangerous for the inexperenced

Is that one of the oil-shale mines to the West of Edinburgh?

Yes, always wondered where it was went a walk and found it no probs but would be a struggle to get into it without a rope, think there are more in the area but thats only the second one i have came accross.

Loads of interesting bits and pieces on the internet about the shale oil industry also a few remains buildings etc if you know where to look.

Yep, I did a bit of reading up on Tarbrax a few years ago, very interesting.

During the NAMHO conference in 2009, I visited Philipstoun No. 6 which as I recall was easy to get into. Just a hole in a field. A reasonable amount to see, but very slippery underground!

Makes me wonder if i actually found it !!, the bit i found was a fenced off part of the field and indeed a large hole but certainly not easy to get into, when i looked at the pin marker on the map i think i was more over to the left, unless of course the marker is placed wrong.

My notes indicate the presence of a winch, but I can't recall a mental image of it.
