My friend Penmorfa found this superb book on Scottish Coal Mining in the nationalised era and put me onto it. I ordered it off Amazon on the back of his review and was well pleased with the book... it gives an excellent overview of each and every NCB owned colliery and lists the licenced operators by each area, as well as a well packaged over view of the industry in geneneral.
Sufficient descriptions of each mines life, depths, etc plus NGRs make this a good tool for mining enthusiasts. There are also a set of highly useful Appendices at the back summarising workforce, closure dates etc.
This book is a must for Scottish Mining Enthusiasts and anyone interested in the coal industry, I just wish there was a publication of similar quality book summarising England and Wales. I am informed a Welsh one was planned but never published.
The book is Hard back and published on good quality paper with plenty of photographs that whilst some are on the small side still convey the subject well.
There is a whole chapter devoted to Lady Victoria colliery which is excellent.
It can be purchased for roundabout £15.. and is worth every penny... a fine book.
