hi,

don't know if anyone can help me with any info here.

I'm currently tracing my family tree, and have found out that my Great Great Grandfather worked at the Swinlees mine (does anyone on here know him 😉 ) around the 1870's time.

I'm looking to see if i can find out any info about the mine - when it opened - when it shut - how many worked there - If there was a register of names at all etc etc - anything at all that would help me paint a better picture.

My Great Great grandfather who definately worked there's name was Charles Reilly.

My other GG Grandfather was Patrick McCann, and John McCann his son were both miners, although it's not yet known if they were at Swinlees.

It's in the data base Barney in Ayrshire.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

yes it was in ayrshire. I have done a 'google' search on it and all i can find is that it was a copper mine. Don't know any other details at all.

You might find a little more about it in this but probably not much.

Have you tried the relevant county council archives? Generally access to them is easy enough.
Or failing that, if the mineral rights are still held, the documentation should be with the holder of the mineral rights
