It appears that this adit is 1.2 km long. There are plans to reopen this mine:

It's on the BBC Iplayer site if anyone wants to listen.

On a slightly different note, but relevant to the topic, we've now got a Major Mining Regions editor for Scotland, so hopefully the number of Scottish mines on the site and MMRs will be increasing over the coming months :flowers:

I can recommend:

THE MINES OF SOUTH WESTERN SCOTLAND by Tony Oldham 2005. 35 pp, 5 surveys cum location maps, 18 colour photos including colour front and rear covers. The mines of south-western Scotland are virtually unknown to most of the inhabitants of England and Wales. In many ways it is a lost and forgotten area. An area of wild beauty, noted more for its agriculture and scenery than for its industries. It has never been of great importance as a centre of mining; nevertheless the scattered occurrences of metalliferous ores that have been worked from time to time are relatively poorly covered in literature. The two main works by G V Wilson (1921) and James R Foster-Smith (1967) are long out of print and difficult to obtain. This present work hopes to overcome this problem by recording those deposits, which are known to exist, and which have been worked or investigated in past times. There is no active mining in the area at present, though some small-scale mining continued as late as 1954. Laminated covers. £7.50

pm me if you want more details.

Strictly speaking, there were probably two mines, and some open-cast, but part of the same complex.

I have a little book about it somewhere. Will post details when I find it, which may be soon, or otherwise. The book is very interesting.

I was impressed by the sheer size of the tramway and other equipment. It was quite a major undertaking. There were even calcining furnaces to do the initial processing to reduce the mass of the ore prior to transport to the blast furnaces.

The massive iron deposits were discovered during surveys carried out before the Great War. During the 1914-18 war they were worked by Baird Ltd who mined 140,000 tons underground and 12,000 tons opencast. The mine was entered by the main adit at 330 feet above sea level. From here the ore was lowered down an incline for 1¼ miles to a 4,000 ton ore bin, where it was taken by steamer to Glasgow for smelting. The mine closed in 1919 and in 1941 all available scrap metal was recovered for armaments. The headings were 12 feet wide by 8 feet wide and until recently one was still open. The article is illustrated by 8 fine photos and 3 maps.

The Laurence and Pamela Draper book is the one I have. It sounds like there may be a new edition. The original was a very good read indeed, although not produced by mining experts.

Lots of interesting photos of the machinery, and fascinating history.

Definitely recommended, if you can find one.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
