As of July we are ready to proceed but still need a deputy/fireman to come on board so as to fulfill the safety requirements. There must be someone out there whose not afraid of some hard work!

There is, but not that wants to use a shovel!
Most folk who have Deputies tickets are now getting on a bit.

You might find someone who will fire some shots and do the inspections but that's about it.

When I left the small mines 20 odd years ago it was getting very hard to find men willing to work that hard. There are easier ways to earn a living for most Deputies and the majority will be getting a British Coal pension too if they were made redundant.

Assuming you are face trained, why not get a ticket yourself? I believe the Mines Rescue Service offer quite a lot of training now, though not sure if they do the Deputies course.
I should be seeing some from the Kellingley MRS next week - I will enquire.

Already been down that route. I'm faced trained and did the Mining craft apprenticeship but never took the lamp. Due to do my Gas and Hearing in October at Dinas, but all the courses have changed the old deputies course has gone and is now an NVQ type one. But we need a deputy on site so that I could then use him as a mentor. Not looking for a deputy who wants to kill himself just to pitch in with us.

Trouble is we're not making good progress as we cannot start without a deputy and we're now back to where we were 2 years ago.

Like my Butty explained,we are back where we started 2yrs ago.
Well not quite,we have registered our company, but the Deputy we found last year, was nothing but a waste of time, went through with signing the company registration forms, then started moaning 3wks later about the cost of this and that, when i told him,he had enough time,6mths before signing to think of these things, and to phone my partner to talk it over, thats 3mths he has`nt bothered to get in contact.
If that is`nt a waste of time ,i don`t know what is.
We found 2 other Deputies since then, plenty of big talk, they had money invested abroad,so investing into the Colliery was`nt a problem, both said they could see the potential in the Colliery,we have 100,000 tons of coal in a 5-6ft section, working pillars on the retreat, furthest coal 400yds,neither got back to us,after chasing them up 2 wks later,it was to much of a project and they would have to wait to long to get their money back,we can be on the coal in 6mths,and thats only working weekends to get things sorted.
So we looked into doing the Deputies course ourselves, then came up against another wall, the way these course`s were written up,No Deputy in Wales could pass the course,as a few of the modules were to do with Longwall faces,we don`t have these anymore in Wales.

So we got in contact with HMIM,explained the situation we were in,they sorted this out,so it can be done in Wales, without the Longwall section.

To be on this course, one had to be mentored by another Deputy,we found a Smallmine, out of Wales who worked weekends,as none here do,but since the HMIM sorted the Deputies course out, this Colliery has temporarily closed due to problems,
So not to be out done,we offered these boys,a look see, they were impressed, could`nt understand why no others were interested, they could see the potential, the amount of coal thats there, and talked the same talk as us,and could see the way we intend to work the Colliery, others we explained this to,just looked at us daft,so we offered them to come in with us,they were keen, and would think it over, but sadly had to decline, due to personal issue`s,or they would be there next weekend,of that we are sure.

The thing is,we are not just looking for a Deputy, but a Partner, with a 3 way split, the seam is Welsh Dry Steam,we have a possibility of screening up to 50% of saleable housecoal sizes, with the price of housecoal at the moment, and the forecast of Energy price rises, just work out the turnover on 60 ton a week of output, and thats not pushing it.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I didn't realise that you two were 'related'. You and I spoke about this a while ago.
I would like to know more about the mentoring process to see if I could offer any help.
I am not in a position to join you in the venture but I do have spare weekday time and might be able to help depending on the requirements of the qualifications.

Ty Gwyn

Yes,either Aberpergwm or Unity,
The deputy who has`nt got back to us,works in Pergwm,we have contacts in both mines, and after asking around,no one is interesting.
We have tried the training officers in both mines, for a list of Deputies looking for work, and have worked through them to no avail.
We have been in contact with Nacods, they know of no one

I have phoned around all the deputies i used to work with, other owners i knew, and owners i got to know through other contacts,i have so many piece`s of paper with phone numbers on,i could paper the living room.

Unless we can find another Colliery, where one of us can get experience under a Deputy,so Mines Resdue can come out to access our competence,we cannot gain the Ticket ourselves.

If all else fails,we will have to raise more money to purchase the Colliery, then pay a Deputy on the days we work there, for us to gain the nessessary experience, and get Mines Rescue out to us, for accessment.

Its all a bit catch 22.

Same here asked around the deputies in the deep mines I worked at either too old or don't want to know. I have all the old and new regulations in front of me now. But can't do anything until we get a deputy on board.

How many days experience does the course require?
I did mine in a week under the old system. However, I did already have my shotfiring papers.

A friend of mine has a colliery, he too is undertaking a deputies course, they say this will take about 4 month to complete. He then has to gain 12 months experience shadowing a deputy at a colliery. Plus on top of this he will need to show the inspector that he is a competent person and capable of managing his colliery - BTW, he has been a collier for the last twenty odd years!
It would appear that the whole system is in need of a major overhaul especially were small mines are concerned.

I wish you all the best in finding a deputy.

Which small mine does he own?

What part of the country has your friend a Colliery Morrisey?

Here in South Wales,we have to shadow a Deputy, while doing the course, then Mines Rescue come out to access ones competence, the initial induction is £360,and the same fee each time Mines Rescue comes out to access ones work.

Initally we were told the course could be done in a few months, then it would take 9-12mths,then it could`nt be done in Wales,as we have no Longwall faces,as the training modules state experience on these is needed, and we`d have to go to Daw Mill to gain this,
What do you expect when consultants of UK coal helped to draw up this training schedule.
But since our contact with HMIM,these modules have been slimmed down to suit our type of mining,as he said,No point in sending a Deputy from Dawmill down to South Wales to supervise repairing a Drift on notched timber,as he would have a clue.
If your butty is having difficulty with the course ,because of these modules, tell him to contact his HMIM,we cannot praise ours enough in sorting this out.

Regarding showing the HMIM he is capable of managing the Colliery, thats the whole purpose of the exercise of gaining the Ticket.
