The 2019 calendar is nearly completed, with the captions remaining to be added.

One query I have is whether there is any more information on Rampgill Firestone level.

What I have so far is:

Quote:

The Firestone Level is a relatively small part of the Rampgill Mine workings and runs parallel and above the Rampgill Vein for almost its full course. It was driven in 1830 to give better access to the workings and to improve ventilation. A leat from the level was used to feed the Smallcleugh reservoir.

Can anyone please add anything else? We don't need a huge amount (probably a sentence), but a small amount more historic / technical detail would be helpful, in particular date abandoned / output / other uses etc.. :flowers:

It's wet, horrible, cold & muddy?

Not very historical but factual. Or I'm soft. One of the two... 😞

It’s no longer wet or muddy.

To the OP - ask GNick. He will more than likely know something...

I would add that this mine closed in 1920, with the closure of the ‘main Nenthead mines’. Which in turn was due to the removal of the wartime subsidy on raising lead & Zinc ores.
It was used to work the upper sills of the Rampgill Mine, and unlike, many of these mines the waste contained Fluorite!
In fact when we visited the area in late 1960’s a guy was pulling out ore for sending to one of the local fluorspar dressing plants.

Seriously, I find that hard to believe from the state I ended up in on my last visit.

When did you last visit?

It is still wet and muddy but the water level is noticeably lower, at least up to the main junction. I suspect that the otter who was in a while back, judging from the footprints, would have suffered wet knees but humans have an easier time, so long as they aren't wearing open toed sandals!

The level is driven on Rampgill vein, not parallel.

I’ll rephrase - A lot less wet and muddy than it was.
Pete appears to have posted some recent photos to the Firestone album.

How about:

A bit edit

The Firestone Level is a part of the Rampgill Mine workings which runs in Rampgill Vein 60m above the Horse Level up to the area of the Rampgill Shaft. It was driven in 1830 to give better access to the workings and to improve ventilation. A leat from the level was used to feed the Smallcleugh reservoir.

Excellent, thank you! I've added two commas ;)

Vanoord,
It seems to do the job exactly!
