The collapsed area of roof is the area that is now open, i.e. the big quadrangle in this photo:

Imagine that fully roofed and covered - probably - to the height of the second slate terrace visible on the right hand side and you'll have an idea of the size and depth of it.

I've a hazy recollection of reading this described as the largest concrete span in the world at the time, but I can't remember where I read that or find reference to it now.

There's a Sub Brit write up which you may find interesting 50shadesofgreen:

The same text also appears in Secret Underground Cities (same author):

On 25th January 1942, two-thirds of the structure collapsed within seconds under the weight of the overlaying backfill, completely engulfing a train of twenty seven wagons which was in the process of unloading. The collapse buried over 14,000 tons of bombs which at the time represented 14% of the total RAF stock.

That's a lot of bombs!
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Looking at the concept illustrations it reminds me of the Gaiety Building at Pwllheli Butlins before it burnt down in the early 70's (I was nowhere near). Close by up behind the bomb store (where I call Wiggley's wonder) there's a GRP substation plastered with kaleidoscopic graffiti. I reckon it must have influenced their ideas looking at the balloons.

A 'spend it all on fees' project profile if ever there was one considering the pre segregation bus full of ambassadors they boast of. And checking out the UN's Sustainable Development Goals they want to adhere to, with so many klingon's its hard to imagine any of those 17 boxes being ticked. Unless its all spent on virtual meetings and nothing is actually built.

I'm not going to read it all again, as it's tosh. But there was mention of some kind of outdoor pursuit area. What kind of enterprise like that would you like to see there?
I mean not another zip-line, paintball or tree-tops thing, and the water is probably toxic. What about a climbing wall? There's pitches up in the quarry behind and up above the lake opposite.

As it seems the hydro scheme is still pending, there needs to be some serious coordination between the two projects. And with both twlls behind the store having sides looking so unstable, from a reservoir construction standard I wonder how they’ll ever convince whoever it would safely hold water (pun!), never mind the issue of what may be buried in there. A QS team’s project paradise with so many variables.

So, to the question of what would I like in there? Keeping with the state’s talent for novel ways to squander money I reckon an old fashioned Lido would be fine. Having an added benefit of needing annual gov support to keep it open. Has to be more viable than wandering corridors and a room full of psychedelic balloons.

Crowd funding? 😉
