It seems the Gwydir estate retained the mineral rights and also all the land around the mines and mine buildings etc when the lease was signed. I imagine if this clause was never put into the agreement absolutely everything mine related in the forest would have been flattened for plantation.

Does anyone know the current situation? Does the Gwydir estate exist anymore or has it been sold off? Is the land on lease by NRW or do they own it?

Forestry Commission Wales owned land became property of the Welsh Government upon devolution, Natural Resources Wales just manage it.
The CAL agreement is with the WG, exception being Temple Mine in mid Wales which was CCW, CCw is now part of NRW so we have a separate agreement on that one.

A lot of the mineral rights around Gwydir belong to Ancaster Estate.
