The model I have I believe to be the first and the charge socket has to have its plug inserted firmly and taped over to render the torch immersion waterproof.
I found out the hard way, but it dried out OK and worked perfectly after.
Apart from that it does what it says on the tin

Photos can be taken with the camera handheld on ordinary daylight settings, and they come out quite good. best are obviously along passages, chambers would have the light localised.
This is possibly its best potential, situations where its inconvenient or not enough time to set up a tripod.

Bloody hell, wow.

The torch. It went south due to the water ingress affecting battery management circuit. It had only been used a few times and the cells are Samsung 3500 mAh that cost £8 a piece from FastTech. So after a bit of thought I decided to recycle the Li Ion cells into lamps and buy a new battery for the torch. I located one at £92 all in at LEDSupermall. Torch is fine again.

I think that the DX80 is the most powerful practical torch and not a bad price. The newer silly models with fans would be NG underground and cast over £400 to boot.
But I would forget Chinese IP ratings.

I wonder if Chinese dive torches belong in the same category as builders promises?

Just out of interest, was mine any good?

I have not actually seen it, anyone record it to disk.
I don't own a TV so have no licence and cannot legally watch iplayer.

It was brilliant mate, and done really well. Yes I have it on disk. I never watch TV either (really don't like it!) but I do have a licence so that I can access the 2% of genuinely worthwhile productions that become available. Such as this one. I also enjoy David Attenborough's Dynasties and Planet Earth. They are works of art and I would pay the licence fee just to see those.

iPlayer doesn't let you keep them but I have a device that will record the 1080p HD stream to an MP4 file. There isn't anything illegal about that, you are, in this country, allowed to make a copy of any transmission (radio or TV) if you were allowed to receive it at time of broadcast, and the copy is only for personal use and not distribution. I don't think the broadcasters like that very much (there is certainly no "burn-to-dvd" option on iPlayer) but with the right gizmo it can be done.

They were however grateful to those who had salted away recordings of things they had deleted so that they could recycle expensive magnetic tape in the '50s '60s and '70s. Goon Shows, Dr Who and the like.

I would't mine a copy, call it vanity. I don't think anything illegal about 'lend to a friend'

Surely you can ask for a copy? When I was on TV for all of 2 seconds even I was sent a dvd from the production company.

Cheers, just watched. They certainly took a lot out. What is there is about a third of the total filming. Will did an abseil down from the skipway bit you reach on a fixed ladder, not there.
Makes me wonder if this is for a purpose, keeping something back to use elsewhere. There was an outdoor intro "Hi I'm Roy etc, like to show you around. They filmed the same bit about 6 times.

Its amazing seeing oneself on film, I have lost a lot of weight in the last 5 or 6 years. If I get any thinner I will look like a snake.

Good advert for the Scorpion lamp though!

Any time Roy, glad to help.

It amazes me how much work goes into a five minute segment. We had TV crew where I work for 8 hours only to end up as about 15 seconds on Countryfile. They did say they may use the footage in a future episode...

It was rather over-charged. But that was very deliberate as it was for the documentary and we wanted to be able to see something. If it was charged properly there would have been just a dull thud and the boulder would have just nearly split down the middle into two halves.

Shot holes were two 35mm diameter, 1.5m deep, both done with a cordless drill and two batteries. Amazing how good cordless drills are these days.

Despite wanting a very visual explosion I still overdid it. My SLR that filmed it was actually very far away on a tripod, and used a long lens (200mm I think!). The shockwave still knocked the camera back a bit, and when we came back we found a big chunk of the boulder (bigger than I could lift) had landed just behind the camera. No damage to my camera fortunately.

As any pirate will tell you, you only get "proper" explosions with BP.

I could tell it was er well powdered - well done, it was most spectacular & as you say, done for just that reason.
I did similar once (but on a much smaller scale) for a film made for Speedwell Cavern, by the late Ralph Johnson. It was nothing like as spectacular as yours though!
That rechargeable must be bloomin' good. When I was doing a lot of digging, I'd struggle to get 2 30cm x 18mm from a couple of batteries. That was in very hard cherty limestone though. Only time I've fired 30mm + holes, they were drilled with a Holman!
Glad no Cameras were harmed in the making of the film. :)

Yeah I know what you mean. Wasn't long ago I'd be doing well to get a 20mm hole sunk 1m with a pile of batteries and still be home for cornflakes.

Now I've got this monster 54v Dewalt with SDS-Max coupling, it puts about 3 horse power into the job and the huge batteries just keep going.

Only problem is when it binds on a big hole it tends to throw me across the chamber. My two shoulders are wrecked (can't lateral-raise more than about 5kg) and I'm sure it's all the drill-bindings. It's so painful when it binds, feels like my arm is being torn from my body :confused:
