This has been bugging me now for the last dozen or so years.

Any ideas what this strange bit of metalwork outside Penarth Slate mine is? It sits bolt upright near the head of the main incline, outside some old workings. Square cut holes in the top, no groves or any evidence of wear marks. Those that have visited the mine have bound to walked passed it.

IIRC, this came up before and the general thoughts were it was a slate saw or planer part that had been re-purposed.
Perhaps others will remember the time/details of the posts.

It's a baseplate for a manual points system, the plate that is at 90 degrees to track, lever on one end tracks on the other.

I would guess the lack of visible wear marks on the above ground portion combined with a further lack of lever mounting holes may suggest otherwise?
It could possibly be a part of one of the three weighing machine shown on early mapping?

It looks quite LARGE for narrow gauge track? Could we have an approximate set of dimensions for the thing poking out of the ground please?

I agree that it looks a repurposed something else, but unsure that it was originally a track component.... it looks almost too substantial.

I thought it was a baseplate but it looks way too big even for mainline standards.
