Have noticed in the main news that Nenthead and a few other villages in Cumbria have been completely cut off by the snow.
Reminds me of times gone by!
Except on previous occasions, villagers had to fend for themselves and not rely on Chinooks!
Just maybe all of us are becoming less hardened to the vagaries of the weather!

If you are stuck at home, console yourself by studying our list of maps and plans in the archive at Nenthead Mines.http://www.nentheadmines.com/category/maps-and-plans/

Hi Peter,
Glad to see you have posted up what maps the society presumably holds, are you making copies available?

I've bin and gone and studied the excel file Pete and I'm much consoled.

Do you know anything more about the plan ref 2.5.149B for the Crewe Estate produced in 1808 by a surveyor (?) named as J Dodds. It's possilbe, perhaps , maybe at a long stretch that may be the same Dodds that is mentioned as having produced a plan, probably for the Raby Estate covering part of Newbiggin Common at a similar point in time, as yet no trace of that plan has come to light but some extra details may give a new angle to search for it.

Out of interest should the excel file be "searchable" I had a quick meander and both the filter and sort options appear to be disabled, not a major issue as it's quite fun just scrolling down the file to see what pops up.

Edit

Sorry just re-read the entry the original was by a John Bell presumably the 1982 copy is by a J Dodds so perhaps another dead end!

Who was the Dodd Level named after, connecting Scraithole and Brownley Hill/Guddamgill?

John Lawson will give chapter and verse on John Dodd.
Be nice to wait for him to come in on it. He once wrote me quite a lengthy and informative letter on it.

I still have all of the stuff he sent to me, way back before email and websites.

Hi Roy,
Nice that you have kept this stuff I sent you years ago. This file that Peter has uplifted makes very interesting reading, hence my question on the copying of it!
I did notice copies of plans uploaded by the usual suspects, but back to Dodds.
Thomas Dodds was the area manager, for Nenthead and Alston Moor during its most productive period. He was the guy that laid out the mines and their connections and ramifications that we all love and admire today. He seems to have an extended family, and my guess is that John Dodds was one of them.
Like many men of his time Thomas no doubt was a difficult man to work for, and if you crossed him then hell would be let loose. We also know that he was the man who commenced redriving Smallcleugh Level, not to intersect the flats, but to work the Middlecleugh and Loncleugh veins.
It was in fact his surveyor, Hethrington, who found the flats, much to Dodd’s chagrin. The record state that Thomas Hethrington had figured out that, there might be flats, associated with Handsome Mea Cross Vein, so in his spare time him and his 3 sons drove the Hethrington cross cut from Middlecleugh 1st Sun Vein towards, what we now know as the Smallcleugh flats. Unfortunately his mates, ie. other miners thought he was wasting his time and laughed at his efforts.
Eventually of course as we know he broke through and hit the flats, but then the records tell us Thomas gave the richest bargain in these new workings to his ‘favourite partnership ‘ so Thomas Hethrington did not gain a lot for his work.
And even then fate had not finished with Hethrington since the record tells us that his house was close to the outflow of Dowgang Hush and during one operation there all his Garden was washed away!
Probably enough said about Mr Dodds.

One mistake I noticed in this account I referred to Thomas Hethrington it should read as manyreaders will know already it is George Hethrington.
The name Dodd level which joins Scraithole mine to Guddamgill I always assumed referred to the Hill it went through, which is called the Dodd.

Searching the document: when downloaded, I am able to search the excel document ( on a mac). Let me know if this does not work for you and we will investigate.

Scanning: we do have some digital versions of these plans. We will, add these to the catalogue later. We would also like to own a drum scanner....might start an appeal.

We have more plans to add and will publish further versions as we add them to the catalogue.

Peter, I did a reasonable copy of the Dinas abandonment plan on an ordinary A4 scanner. I scans it in sections and joined them together in Photoshop. Turned out a lot better than expected.

While I have your attention can you grab the metal guillotine from Mark and bring it to the forthcoming NAMHO Council meeting and I will bung you the £20 for return.
