At Penarth

Hefty bit of cast iron upended like a gravestone. I wondered if it was some sort of machine bed from a saw or something similar re-used for another purpose - looks like a centring groove at the top?

Looks to me like some kind of stay with holes for wire ropes/cables.

Is there any sign of a construction near it that might have been stabilised with "guy ropes"?

If you search through the many saw images available you may be able to confirm your original speculation.

I think I can rule out a Stenner saw.

I've been wondering the same for some time now as well! It's near the old incline and not far from one of the adits (now blocked) but there's no wear marks to indicate cables moving through it and no significant infrastructure around it to give any clues.

Incidentally we were in Penarth yesterday, and if anyone needed those large white spray painted arrows and "WO" signs to navigate the mine you'll be out of luck; amazing what a couple of sturdy brushes and mud can achieve...

As the holes are not central in what I assume is a machined part of the casting it could be some sort of machine cross slide. The groove could well be a grease groove.
Do you have an image of the other side?

Depending on it's location on the site, it may even be a boundary marker, being re-used from it's original (industrial) purpose.
Madness takes its toll, please carry exact change

It does line up with something on the hillside behind the building but I'm sure this wasn't its original purpose, if so it's massively over engineered!

Sadly not, though from memory the other side is completely flush.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
