Re: Bryneglwys

As I volunteered to lead this one, I'd better think about making some arrangements.

25th Feb was suggested but that's a bit close to the Williamson's tunnels trip that I want to do, so can I have some votes for March 4, 5, 18 or 19?
Any preference?

5th or 19th would get my vote. Are the underground workings easily accessed here? I do enjoy a bit of SRT ??

All these dates OK for me and also John that I mentioned. Sundays are a bit easier for me, but can do Saturdays if need be.

me and a few friends would love to be able to get a tour of masson, we have been 3 times recently and never found our way down yet, lots of crawls to nothing is all we have found 😞 We camped there this weekend and were met by a gang of youths at the opening in the bottom corner of the quarry! Glass, cans and litter everywhere, we did remove some but there was far too much to carry between :(

Anyway, we cleared them off and spent a good 3 hours exploring every run and crevice and still no joy getting down to the next level towards youds...

We are more than keen to complete this route

I don't think so? We was there on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and the sunday of the weekend before, lots of youngsters there this weekend drinking and smashed glass on the ledge before you climb into the system 😠 they moved on once they saw we was there for the duration

I removed several corona bottles on my Monday visit....

If you don't mind flat-out crawls, try the side entrance for getting into the system - obvious void at the cliff face then take the obviously worn left-hand way, there are three possible routes down into the main series.

Might have a quick drive up tonight only a 20 min drive from me, if i see anymore litter or bottles i'll be sure to put them in my bag and dispose at sainsburies bottle bank!

If i fail tonight, i shall take photo's of the route i am taking, we always seem to get down into the large chamber with a wheel barrow in it and the blue pipe which leads to the flooded chamber then from there i'm sure we have taken every route and been circled back to the same place

I can see why people say you can get lost but it still baffles me how you can get really lost and not know the way back... :stupid:

It does however need revision, I discovered that one of the passages I'd marked as collapsed is still navigable!

I have indeed used that map, for my own reference is the dale shaft the chamber with the tin can bin in the middle of it? I have crossed the flooded chamber at the top to find no way through as the map states, then took the tight crawl through the mineral tunnel with all the cube like crystal rocks which then gets tighter and tighter until you come to a dead end it seems... I must be missing something on that route as that appears to be the only way through to the workings on the right side of the map?

You'll not find a way through at the end of the flooded chamber, the connection to the showcave is normally under the water. Last time I was there you could enter the connection as the water was low - I did post on here about it. Roger did comment as well.

Of course you won't be able to actually get into the showcave as there is a gate/grille. I recall this being visible from the large chamber when I did the showcave tour a while back.

Yes, that is Dale Mine chamber with the large kibble in it. The workings on the lower right of the map are accessible but there's a gate on the connection to the show cave, which occupies most of the upper right. There are some workings not on the tourist route (and quite interesting ones too) but unfortunately the only access to them is through the show cave so they're not normally visitable.

So it seems i may have done the whole of masson then including the crawly circular routes that break souls and hearts when you pop back out where you started :lol::lol:

I'd still like to do gentlewomans to youds at some point if somebody ever plans that please keep me in mind 🙂

Also in that same chamber has anybody been up the crawl to the left just on the waters edge? Its like a pool you crawl through which dries and continues crawling... It doesn't seem to show as travelling that far on that survey? Also travelled up the coffin level from the trickling water as you make your way down from the entrance point, climbed up the shaft at the top and that also has a very long belly crawl that i didn't want to try that night...

That one doesn't go all that far, I've had a grovel down it once.

If you go up the coffin level and up the shaft with the school gym rope, it's mostly hands and knees heading out apart from a couple of flat-outs.

If you're looking for more explores in that area, how much of Devonshire have you seen? There's a lot beyond the standard routes that doesn't often get visited.

Hi Praada, if you're serious about Gentlewomans, don't mind an abseil down a tightish shaft, are able to Prussik back up if need be, bit of unroped climbing into the stopes, a lot more crawling than you tend to remember, usually after Owd Git has been down to turn the pointy ones up! Then it can be arranged. I was down there on Saturday just gone. Get in touch. Might recommend we do something first!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
