A nasty situation to be in.

I wonder if the underground workers made use of the underground refuge chamber with the built-in oxygen supply and breathing apparatus while the rescue team was fighting the fire?

Yes, the refuges were most definitely used according to the Union rep on the news

Fire broke out at around 1230am at a depth of 3600ft, approx. 8Km East of shaft bottom. 11 people were directly involved in the incident of whom 7 were treated in hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion - all now released.

The incident was ended by 5am and involved burning polystyrene.
